Alas, we come to the final week of Surrender the Heart month! I hope you've enjoyed it as much as I have. Before we begin, let me annuonce the two winners from last week: JackieSmith and Karien
Congratulations, ladies! Everyone else, you only have one more chance to win a free copy of my new book.
The answer to last week's quiz was B. "Then you shouldn't have snuck aboard my ship."
Many of you got it correct!! But in all fairness, it was a difficult question.
Now for this week's snippet. Read the dialogue below and then based on what you know about Marianne, choose what you think would be her response. No matter whether you are right or wrong, your name gets entered in this last contest. I will announce the two winners next Friday!
Surrender the Heart
He proffered his elbow. “Milady, may I escort you to the railing? I believe that’s where you were heading before I interrupted?”
Marianne hesitated. Why was he being kind? She could not trust him. Squaring her shoulders, she lifted her chin. “I can make it on my own, thank you, Noah.”
“Captain.”
Did the man’s arrogance never end? “Captain Noah.”
“Just Captain will do.” He grinned.
Releasing the wood, Marianne started out again for the railing. “What brings you up here in the middle of the night?”
He chuckled. “I could ask you the same. But it’s not the middle of the night. Dawn will be upon us in minutes.”
Marianne inched her shoes over the planks, forcing down her fear, determined to prove to this man that she was no coward. “Do the floors on this ship ever stop wobbling?”
Noah grinned. “Decks. The floors on a ship are called decks, Miss Denton.”
She grimaced. “What does it matter? You know what I mean.”
“If you are to spend months aboard, you should know the terminology so you aren’t mistaken for a landlubber.”
“But I am a landlubber.” She huffed. “A landlubber who has no intention of becoming a seaman—or seawoman.”
Noah walked beside her all the way to the railing as if he cared whether she fell. Marianne gripped the railing, the perspiration from her hands sliding over the wood. Taking a spot beside her, he inhaled a deep breath as he gazed upon the obsidian sea. He shook his hair behind him. Moonlight washed over him, setting his sun-bronzed skin aglow and dabbing silver atop the light stubble on his jaw. He planted his feet part and clutched the railing, the muscles in his arms flexing beneath his shirt. He seemed to have the weight of the world upon him, and Marianne tore her gaze away before any further sympathetic sentiments took root.
Facing her, he studied her intently.
Marianne stared at the railing, the moon, the fading stars, anywhere but at the liquid black death upon which they floated or the liquid blue death in the eyes of a man who hated her. “Can I help you with something, Captain?”
“It’s true then.”
“What?”
“You are afraid of the sea.” He glanced at the tight grip her trembling hands had on the railing.
She hated that it was so obvious. She hated showing this man any weakness. “You need not concern yourself with me, Captain.”
“As captain, I must concern myself with everyone on board.” His brows lifted. “What has me quite baffled, miss, is in light of this fear, why you would steal the very instruments which will aid us to shore. What were you planning on doing with them? Tossing them overboard?” He grinned.
A wave of shame heated Marianne’s face. She took a deep breath and tried to ignore the sea rushing past them not twenty feet below. “If you must know, yes, that was exactly my plan.”
He chuckled. Which further angered her. “I assure you, miss, I’ve been at sea long enough to know how to navigate without them. Difficult as it would be, it would only delay our reaching the safety of land.” He leaned toward her until she could feel his warm breath on her neck. “I would abandon your efforts to turn this ship around, Miss Denton. Mark my words, we will make it to England as well as our other ports of call.”
Marianne gave a smug huff. England perhaps, but once he discovered she had ruined his precious cargo, he’d have no choice but to return home to Baltimore.
Now, which one of these do you think Marianne said?
A."I fear I must confess a grievous sin."
B. "I plead with you, Captain. I cannot bear this sea another minute."
C. “We shall see, Captain Noah.”
D. "You are far too handsome a captain to be so cruel."
E. "Perhaps I shall use my feminine charms to persuade you otherwise."

Out of the pit of Corruption and Nothingness!
You have loved back my life from the pit of corruption and nothingness, for You have cast all my sins behind Your back. Isaiah 38:17
In my morning time with God, we are reading through Isaiah in the Amplified version. Last week, this verse nearly leapt off the page at me and I really felt I should share it with all of you. Sometimes we get so caught up in all the rules and functions, and theology of Christianity that we forget the simplicity of the gospel message.
That God's love is neverending, pure, unconditional, and unfathomable. That to Him, we are His Exceedingly Precious Children. That His love is the most powerful force in the world and it will NEVER fail.
You see, I was one of those rebellious kids wallowing in the filth of my own pit I had created. Corruption and Nothingness are perfect descriptors of my life without God. There was no purpose, no hope, no joy, and everything was corrupt, impure, unholy, and defiled--my marriage, my kids, my job, everything thought that filled my head.
I think it was Spurgeon who describes the unsaved as strolling down a muddy, manuer-laden path that is filled with biting poisonous snakes, but to them, it looks like a smooth path in the middle of a field of flowers. That's the deception of Satan. I thought I was doing okay, making my own way in life, but little did I know that I was being bitten over and over again by snakes while I walked along a path that led over a cliff into the pit of hell.
So when Isaiah says that "God loved me back from the pit..." That's exactly what He did. It was God's unconditional, all-encompassing love that lured me away from the path of destruction I was on. I shudder to think of where I'd be now if I hadn't answered His love song. Not only did He love me, but then He cast all my sins behind my back!! Think about that for a minute. Everything you've ever done wrong, everything you're ashamed of is behind you. And the further you walk with God, the further you travel from those sins until one day, you won't be able to see them anymore. You see, they can't follow you. They are left along the side of the road like the trash they are.
I don't know about you, but this quick reminder of God's love really encouraged me. I hope it does you too.

Week 4 of Surrender the Heart month!
Now things get fun! But first, our winners from last week are Heather and AppleBlossom!! Contratulations, Ladies!! And thanks to everyone for your comments on my trailer. But don't despair, I'm choosing two more winners next Friday!
Now that you know a bit about the hero and heroine and have seen the trailer, I'm going to pull a short scene out of the book and then cut off the character's final sentence. Then I'll give you a selection of answers to choose from, based on what you know about that character. Today we will try and guess what Noah Brenin would say. Next week, it will be Marianne's turn.
Here's the snippet:
Noah adjusted the cuffs of his white shirt then cocked his head toward her. “What has me quite vexed, Miss Denton, is what benefit this match is for you. It is obvious you loathe me.”
“Loathe is a strong word.” She batted the air, trying to avoid the question. The smell of wine and leather and aged wood filled her nose. She couldn’t very well tell Noah that she and her mother were nearly destitute, that without this marriage, they could not touch the inheritance her father left her and purchase the much-needed medicines to keep her mother alive. She wasn’t lying to him. He would receive the seven thousand dollars of her dowry the moment they married. But what he didn’t know was that he would receive nothing else, no jewelry, or silverware, satin sheets, china, Persian rugs, or any of the luxuries her mother had been forced to sell this past year. Instead he would acquire only Marianne, her sister, and a sick mother-in-law. So, Marianne simply responded, “Our fathers wished it.”
He eyed her curiously. “Your father would not wish you unhappy, miss. I assure you I will not make you a good husband.”
Marianne gripped the arm of the chair. Her throat went dry. “Why are you trying to dissuade me when you have admitted that you need my money?”
He shrugged and stared out the open door down the corridor. “I see how my presence upsets you. It would no doubt be pure torture for you should we marry.”
“What upsets me is your behavior.”
“Unfortunately the two cannot be separated.”
“That is not true. People can change if they want to. God can change people.”
“What has He to do with it?”
Marianne flinched. “God has everything to do with everything.”
“If that is so, then He has much to answer for.” He frowned and turned to stare out the stern windows.
“You should not say such things, Noah.” Marianne’s heart saddened. His family had faced tragedy, as had hers. But she had not forsaken God. Or had she? Certainly her trust in Him had waned.
She struggled to her feet. “Enough of this. I cannot sail to England with you. My mother is ill and needs my help.”
He faced her. “She has servants who will attend to her, I am sure.”
In truth, no. “Only I can see to her properly. And my little sister will be lost without me. I simply cannot be gone for months.”
Please choose from the following possibilities and leave a comment telling me your choice and why. Whether you are right or wrong, I'll still enter you in the contest to win a free book!
A. "Very well. Far be it for me to cause you or your mother any discomfort."
B. “Then you shouldn’t have snuck aboard my ship.”
C. "Perhaps you should ask this God of yours to transport you home."
D. "Regardless of your sentiments, I relish the opportunity to get to know you better."
E. "Why of course not. I've been a complete scoundrel and will turn the ship around at once."

Out of Time!
Time is one of those illusive concepts I have a really hard time grasping. It doesn't seem to follow any natural laws. The passage of time seems so relative! If I'm having a good time, time passes by really fast! But when I'm bored and miserable, it creeps by like molasses. How fair is that? I don't know about you but in the past decade, I'm sensing a speeding up of time. It seems to take less time for a day to pass, a week, a year... In fact, it seems to be moving so fast, I sometimes forget what month or year it is.. (Yea, yea.. probably due to old age!)
To be honest with you, time has become my enemy, like some cruel taskmaster, it lurks over me with whip in hand waiting to strike me down for not accomplishing something within its boundaries. Of course having book deadlines doesn't help much, but even before I had deadlines, I always had a disdain for time. And don't get me started on what time is doing to my face and body. Uggg.. Basically (and forgive me for the word) but Time sucks.
That' why it is always such a comfort to me to know that God exists outside of time. In fact, God created time and set it in motion like the sands sifting through an hour glass. And some day, those sands will run out and the Lord will return to claim His own and make all things new!
But until that day, I'm also comforted by the fact that because God created time and is outside of time, He can also manipulate time. He does so several times in the Bible. He held the sun still for Joshua during an important battle. And in Isaiah 38, God moves time backward for Ahaz as a sign that He will do what He says.
But one of my favorite stories is found in John 6 where Jesus is walking on the water.
So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid. But he saith unto them, It is I; (Literally I AM - releasing the power of Almight God by using His name) be not afraid. Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.
Jesus had told the disciples to go to the other side of the lake but a huge storm swept in and not only delayed them but threatened their life. When Jesus comes to them walking on the water, they at first think He's a ghost, but after they realize who He is, Jesus gets in the boat and CHAZAM, they are at the other side of the lake. ! Wow... that must have been some trip.
The lesson? No matter how much you have on your plate, no matter how badly you're pressed for time, if you're in God's will, it doesn't matter how many storms blow in to interrupt your "schedule". God can fast forward time and make it so you meet every deadline, every commitment. Just trust in Him.
And believe me, I'm really writing this post for myself because I struggle with this issue all the time (pardon the pun) worrying about finishing this and finishing that and writing and being a wife and mother and cooking and cleaning the house and marketing.. on and on.. until I get myself all stressed and worried. This is not pleasing to God. God wants us to rest in Him and Trust Him... because He is trustworthy!

This week, I'm showcasing the Book trailer for Surrender the Heart, and I'd like you to answer 2 questions for me after you watch it.
What about the trailer made you want to read the book?
Was there anything in the trailer that you didn't like?
So, leave your answers and I'll choose TWO more winners next Friday. Then stay tuned because in the final two weeks, I'm going to post excerpts of the book and ask you to complete sentences by the main characters to test how well you know them now! Fun, huh?

Got peace?
True peace. That's one thing I think everyone in this world is searching for. Not just peace in the world (although that would be nice) but peace in their own lives, in their families, in their own hearts.
So, do you have perfect peace in every area of your life? I have to admit that I don't all the time. In fact, as I'm writing this, I have several major problems on my mind involving my immediate family. Outside of my family, I have friends who are going through divorce, have cancer, are foreclosing on their house and filing for bankruptcy, can't find work, whose kids are on drugs, kids who are in trouble, marriages failing. I could go on. I don't know about you, but it seems like life just keeps getting harder and harder and the problems get worse and worse.
So where is the peace? We can't get rid of the problems. They seem to keep coming in wave after wave. In fact, I believe things will get much worse as we draw closer to the end of the age and the return of Jesus. So, if we can't eliminate or avoid problems, how do we find peace?
The other day, I found an exact recipe for peace in Isaiah 26
You will guard him and keep him in perfect and constant peace whose mind [both its inclination and its character] is stayed on You, because he commits himself to You, leans on You, and hopes confidently in You. So trust in the Lord forever; for the Lord God is an everlasting Rock [the Rock of Ages]. (Amplified version)
Recipe for Peace
Ingredients
1. Hope
2. Inclination
3. Character
4. Trust
5. Mind
6. Leaning
7. Commiting
Directions:
1.Take your mind, inclination (desires) and character (entire being) and focus them on Jesus ALL THE TIME.
2. Commit your entire life and future and all your problems to Jesus and lean (rely, depend, rest) on Him
3. Hope confidently (believe) that Jesus will come through for you.
4. Trust in Jesus forever
Do these four things over and over again in your mind and heart all day and all night and God guarantees you will have Perfect and Constant Peace.
I don't know about you, but this is one recipe I'm going to try!

Week 2 of Surrender the Heart Month!
The 2 winners of last week's drawing are: Melanie I and Hannah!!! Congratulations to these ladies! And than you all for entering. But don't give up! I've giving away another 2 copies this week. Simply read the post below, leave a comment and I'll draw 2 more names next Friday!
Today, we will learn about the Hero in Surrender the Heart, Noah Brenin
Brief Description: Noah is a driven man. At age six and twenty, with brown hair streaked by the sun, tan skin, deep blue eyes, and the muscular physique of a seaman, he presents quite a dashing figure around Baltimore. But marriage is the last thing on his mind. He has more important matters to attend to, such as keeping the Brenin merchant business afloat. Recent embargos and his own failures have cost the business dearly and caused his overbearing father to demand more and more from him. Bearing the guilt of an accident in his youth, Noah pushes himself to the limit, hoping to make up for the incident to his father and mother. He has no time for God, nor does he believe in destiny. Nothing matters except making enough wealth to pay for the past—not the upcoming war, not his country, and certainly not marrying Marianne Denton.
Strengths: Natural leader, brave, confident, hard working, honorable
Weaknesses: Selfish, unpatriotic, shallow, loyal only to self and family
Quirks: When Noah gets nervous or angry, he rubs the back of his neck.
Inspiration: I took my inspiration for Noah from people I’ve met who have been burdened down with guilt. Guilt can do horrible things to people. It can cause them to do things they would normally never do. The guilty person is like someone carrying a huge burden. He’s always trying to unload it, by either shifting it to someone else, or pursuing a course he thinks will somehow pay the fee to have it removed. A guilty person is obsessed with self because guilt feeds on selfishness. In Noah’s case, his desire to appease his guilt has overtaken his life and caused him to not care for anyone, not even God or his country. But things change quickly when he encounters Miss Marianne Denton!

Happy 234th birthday, America!
I love my country, and I thank God every day for allowing me to be born here and grow up as an American citizen. Out of all the nations on earth, our citizens have the most freedom and the most opportunity! What a privilege and an honor to be an American.
That's why it breaks my heart to watch as our school textbooks are being revised to take out the fundamental truths of who we are and where we came from, to stand by while a power hungry, self-serving, arrogant government slowly leeches away our freedoms, to listen to the anti-American rhetoric coming from within our own goverment and from within our own citizens. Yes, America is not perfect and we do have problems, but we are the greatest nation on earth. And you want to know why?
Because we were founded on faith in God and on His holy principles from the Bible. Here's just a few quotes from our founding fathers:
John Adams - Signer of the Declaration and 2nd President of the United States
The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were the general principles of Christianity. I will avow that I then believed, and now believe, that those general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God
John Quincy Adams - 6th President of the United States
In the chain of human events, the birthday of the nation is indissolubly linked with the birthday of the Savior. The Declaration of Independence laid the cornerstone of human government upon the first precepts of Christianity
Samuel Adams - Signer of the Declaration
I conceive we cannot better express ourselves than by humbly supplicating the Supreme Ruler of the world . . . that the confusions that are and have been among the nations may be overruled by the promoting and speedily bringing in the holy and happy period when the kingdoms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ may be everywhere established, and the people willingly bow to the scepter of Him who is the Prince of Peace
Gunning Bedford - signer of the Constitution, Federal Judge
To the triune God – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost – be ascribed all honor and dominion, forevermore – Amen
Elias Boudinot- President of Congress, Signed the peace treaty to end the American Revelotion, Framer of the Bill of Rights, First Attorney admitted to the US Supreme Court Bar
Let us enter on this important business under the idea that we are Christians on whom the eyes of the world are now turned… Let us earnestly call and beseech Him, for Christ’s sake, to preside in our councils. . . . We can only depend on the all powerful influence of the Spirit of God, Whose Divine aid and assistance it becomes us as a Christian people most devoutly to implore. Therefore I move that some minister of the Gospel be requested to attend this Congress every morning . . . in order to open the meeting with prayer
Noah Webster - Revolutionary soldier, educator, legislator
The moral principles and precepts found in the Scriptures ought to form the basis of all our civil constitutions and laws
Daniel Webster - US Senator, Secretary of State
The Christian religion – its general principles – must ever be regarded among us as the foundation of civil society
George Washington - 1st President and Father of our Country
While we are zealously performing the duties of good citizens and soldiers, we certainly ought not to be inattentive to the higher duties of religion. To the distinguished character of Patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian
I could go on and on. I highly recommend you check it out for yourself. There's a great site called Wallbuilders where you can find out all sorts of information and see original documents for yourself. Here's the link: http://www.wallbuilders.com/
As we celebrate the birth of our great nation and remember the sacrifices of those who laid the foundation, let us look to heaven and beg God's forgiveness for having strayed so far from Him, for having removed the Bible and prayer from schools and from our government. Let us ask God to restore our land to its former glory that we might be a light to the world of God's love and salvation.
I will leave you with one final quote from John Adams
Without religion, this world would be something not fit to be mentioned in polite company: I mean hell

Anyway, Welcome to week 1 of Surrender the Heart Month. Each Friday I'll be posting something about the book, character, plot, etc.. All you need to do is read over the post, make a comment about what you read, and I'll enter your name in a contest. Every Friday, starting at the 9th, I'll be drawing 2 names to win a free copy of the book. So, tell all your friends and have them drop by and enter.!!!
Today, we will learn about the heroine of the story, Marianne Denton
Brief Description: Marianne Denton is plain. At least that’s how people describe her. At age 25with mousy brown hair, lackluster brown eyes, and a figure on the plump side, she rarely turns heads in her hometown of Baltimore. Possessing no particular skills and with nothing remarkable about her appearance, she has resigned herself to a life caring for her ailing mother and younger sister. After all, she can hardly compete for a husband when there are dozens of other young ladies much more beautiful and talented than her. She has no time for courting anyway. After her father died, leaving the family destitute, she spends her time trying to support her family and purchase her mother’s essential medicines. But the money is running out. The inheritance her father left her can only be touched upon her marriage. And there are not exactly suitors lining at her door, vying for her hand. Despite her waning faith in God, Marianne is a caring, loving person who is extremely loyal to those she loves.
Strengths: Kind, Patriotic, Charitable, Loyal, Intelligent, Persevering
Weaknesses: Untrusting, Stubborn, Insecure, Pessimist
Quirks: Marianne wears a ruby ring that her father gave her once. A distant, unloving father, he rarely had a kind word for Marianne, nor did he often give her gifts. Therefore, this ring means a great deal to Marianne. It represents the father she wishes she had—one who made her feel valued and loved. When she’s nervous or agitated, she twists the ring around her finger.
Inspiration: To me, Marianne represents every normal, average woman. There is nothing remarkable about her appearance or her abilities that would make anyone stop and take a second look. She’s the woman in the crowd that nobody sees, the girl that never gets asked out, the student whose grades are always average, the face everyone forgets, and the girl who knows her place in the food chain of popularity. I’ve been wanting to write a story about such a woman for a long time because I believe there are many women out there who can relate to her. Let’s face it, not many of us are top models or intellectual giants. Most of us just meander through life, doing ordinary things and really not expecting great adventures to come our way. But that’s not true. God loves the underdog, and He has great adventures and romance for everyone who turns to Him and surrenders to His will.

My trip to the International Christian Retailer's Show!
Julie Lessman, Me, Julie Klassen, Sue Brower
I had a fabulous time. God is good! No travel problems, whatsoever. Just a couple small delays in the airplanes but I arrived everywhere on time and so did my luggage! My friend and excellent author, Kaye Dacus, picked me up at the St. Louis Airport and drove me to the hotel, so that relieved some stress of finding a taxi or a shuttle. And my other friend and excellent author, Julie Lessman, took me back to the airport!
For those of you who don't know what this show is, it is an annual event for all the business owners of Christian stores throughout the world. They come together and take classes about how to run their stores more effectively, etc... and then they can wander through this giant convention floor filled with Christian vendors displaying their latest wares. Anything from paintings, to music CDs, to movies, figurines, decorations or all kinds, toys.... and of course the latest books!
I did 2 signings and another fiction giveaway at my publisher's booth, and I met with my agent, had dinner with my publisher and just hung out with my author friends. We had a blast!
Here's some pictures you may have already seen on Facebook:
Kaye Dacus, Ronie Kendig, Mary Connealy, me, Nancy Mehl, Wanda Brunstetter
Mary Connealy and I signing books!
Hey, check out that line!!!!
Kaye Dacus, Nancy Mehl, and Ronie Kendig signing!
And finally
Julie Klassen (who just won a Christy Award for her book Silent Governess!!!) , Julie Lessman, and Me.
Stay tuned tomorrow for the beginning of Surrender the Heart Month!
