What is the Fear of the Lord? And what are the benefits?

The Fear of the Lord, or simply fearing the Lord, what does it mean exactly? Does it mean we cower before Him, trembling that He might inflict some punishment on us?  No. It means so much more than that. Some people might say it means reverence toward God.  And yes, it does mean that as well. But what does reverence mean? Worship? Awe?  Absolutely! Yet, the fear of the Lord is even more than that. It is worshipful love and adoration and thanksgiving and praise all bundled up together. To fear the Lord means He is number 1 in our life. It means we love him more than our own life and we strive daily to walk in obedience and to please Him. We don't do it because we worry he will punish us. Although sometimes that kind of fear can keep us out of trouble!  But we do it because we know Him and love Him and because He is God!

You might say that is a tall order, and yes it is. But once you get to know Him, really KNOW Him, it comes naturally.

As a personal testimony, I can honestly say that the Lord has showered on me many of these blessings since the time I got truly saved. He has blessed me far far more than I could ever deserve. He has protected me, defended me, provided for me, honored me with the sense of His presence, spoken to me, strengthened me when I thought I couldn't go on, given me confidence, increased my faith, and promised to save my children!  So, let these Holy Words sink deep in your soul. Then Fear the Lord as He deserves and believe what He promises to those who do!

Let me list some of the benefits from Scripture of Fearing the Lord. This is not an exhaustive list, but one that should help you grasp how much God wants to bless those who truly know and love Him.

Descendants mighty on the Earth
Generation of the upright blessed
Wealth, Riches
Never be shaken
No fear of bad news
His righteousness endures forever    Psalm 112

The Beginning of Wisdom  Proverbs 1:7
The Lord will share His secrets  Psalm 25:14
The Lords Mercy on you and generations after you  Luke 1:50
The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him  Psalm 147:11
You will not go hungry and lack ANY good thing  Psalm 34:9-10
You will have health to your flesh and strength to your bones  Proverbs 3:7-8
The fear of the Lord is clean and endures FOREVER Psalm 19:9
The Lord will fulfill your desires Psalm 145:19
You will depart from evil Proverbs 16:6
The Fear of the Lord keeps you from sin  Exodus 20:20
The angel of the Lord encamps around you. Psalm 34:7

You will have strong confidence
You will have a place of refuge
You will have a fountain of life!  Proverbs 14:26-27

Great goodness is laid up for you
You will be hidden in the secret place of His presence! Psalm 31:19-20

The eye of the Lord will be upon you
He keeps your soul from death
Keeps you alive in famine
Is your shield   Psalm 33:18-20

I'll end with these great verses from Malachi 3:16-17

Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another,
And the Lord listened and heard them;
So a book of remembrance was written before Him
For those who fear the Lord
And who meditate on His name.

“They shall be Mine,” says the Lord of hosts,
“On the day that I make them My jewels.
And I will spare them
As a man spares his own son who serves him
.”

  1. Hello Sister in Christ,

I strongly believe fearing the Lord means we will do whatever it takes to please Him, for we acknowledge His greatness and glory that is incompatible. As it said in Isaiah 42:9, “I am the Lord, that is my name. And my glory I will give to no one else,” that explains how fear of the Lord represents complete reverence and obedience to Him.

You may have heard of the attempted hijacking of the FlyDubai airliner from Dubai to Israel a few days ago - investigators stated that the terrorist “underwent extreme radicalization.” How he turned out to be the copilot indicates that demons can secretly hide in anyone and be “activated” at a certain time or trigger? Also interesting how it was a flight to Israel, for Netanyahu praised the pilot’s act of bravery for attempting to stop the perpetrator despite being seriously wounded.

I read some articles lately and one area I noticed is that multiple authors have written references from Revelation, such as how the Seals and Trumpets occur likely during the first half of the Tribulation, even though Scripture does not specifically indicate a chronological sequence of the judgments. I remember you said in a past post that if the same idea is mentioned multiple times from various sources, then it may be a sign from the Lord, so I wonder if there may possibly be some credence to this. After all, the Two Witnesses are mentioned after the Sixth Trumpet, and I recall they will only be present on Earth prior to the second half, so perhaps this may be plausible?

From Malachi, I remember Chapter 3 Verses 4-5 where it said “I will bring you Elijah, before the Great Day of the Lord.” I believe this may be confirmation that Elijah will be one of the Two Witnesses, along with Moses. That made me wonder, when Peter and John saw the Transfiguration of Jesus, where Moses and Elijah appeared beside Him, doesn’t that symbolize the same appearance during the Tribulation? Also, would the Two Witnesses be the real Moses and Elijah resurrected, or are they two designated beings having their divine abilities?

Have a great day Sister and stay strong in the Lord always. Peace and Blessings from a Brother in Christ.

    1. Greetings, Brother! Yes, heard about the hijacking. By all accounts it sounds like a great story and the kind they make movies about. Anyone who enjoys killing has to be demon possessed or perhaps brainwashed by something like MK Ultra and then triggered to commit horrific acts. However, I'm not sure this entire story is true... or perhaps something set up as a false flag event. Remember we really can't trust anything we see in the media.
There are many articles, posts, books out there that attempt to explain the book of Revelation. Since the Bible is not specific on the timing of things, I would just take them with a grain of salt. Check everything against Scripture. These are no doubt just men's opinions.. perhaps based on study.. yes.. but still opinions. I think we will all be surprised at how things turn out.
We do not know who the 2 witnesses are. The Scripture doesn't say specifically. I personally believe they are Elijah and Moses but only the Lord knows. Elijah never died so he would not be resurrected... Enoch is another possibility since he never died. The devil fought to keep Moses's body so that makes me think it could be him. But it doesn't matter. We won't be here.

      Blessings to you and yours!

  2. Greetings Holy Messenger of God,

Fearing the Lord may be a strong compelling feeling that makes us loyal to Him to a point where we are perhaps overly mindful of our actions. However, it is beneficial in that our minds are only set on doing whatever pleases the Lord, so it may be a huge plus since that shows we are obedient to Him.

Based on how things are turning out in the world, particularly the airline incident where a rabbi was assaulted on a plane (the attacker later stated he does not even recall his own behavior, but Christian outlets suspect it was a demon-possessed act of hate), I heard some true Believers are fearful that if the Lord continues to tarry, then they, possibly including us, may be subject to persecution, even though there is plenty of evidence in Scripture noting that we will not be experiencing God’s wrath since we are in Christ. I am sure those people are still highly hopeful for this year, but even when next year comes, that would have to be the latest since any later may go against God’s prophesied timeline? A lot of watchmen are adamant that 2030 has to be the midpoint of the Tribulation, so that means we still have until the beginning of summer next year before 3.5 years may lead into 2031. Do you think this is credible?

Last night, I had another unusual dream which I feel may be another version of the Rapture, that is very different from the one I had over a little over a year ago. Everything was normal and usual, and then there was sudden silence and then a rumbling sound with a bright light appearing, though I did not see the Lord not anyone being lifted into the air. I wonder if this may be the Lord’s way of keeping my faith strong for I have seen Believers giving accounts of similar experiences? For instance, some have multiple dreams while I only have some occasionally - it does not mean that the Lord sees me differently but that He has various ways of reaching out to true Believers?

Enjoy the rest of the weekend and stay safe from the brutal heat wave that I read is scorching California late into next week. Some Believers feel that this, along with several recent unbearable heat waves, earthquakes, and floods, may be signs that God is bringing judgment soon. Could this be a possible interpretation? Blessings and Come Quickly Lord Jesus!

    1. Greetings! We as true believers are not immune to enduring persecution. Persecution is not necessarily the wrath of God. Many countless believers throughout the ages have been tortured, imprisoned and butchered for their belief in Jesus. We should not think we won't be. So, it's quite possible we may have to endure some persecution. I don't say that to cause fear. The Lord will be with us every second!
I admit I am losing hope for this year, but God has His appointed time, so I just keep waiting and watching. Whether it's this year or next or whenever, it's more important to be ready to go than anything else. There are a zillion watchmen out there with a zillion "dates" and ideas of the timing. They have all been wrong thus far, so I would just take in what they say and hand it over to the Lord!
That was a wonderful dream! I believe the Lord is telling you that the rapture will occur on a very normal day when no one expects it. You will be going about your daily tasks, and boom, it will happen. And yes, the Lord deals with each individual differently that best suits their particular personality...
Yes.. it's supposed to be hot here.... I think all the storms, quakes, heat, and cold are all part of the Earth groaning for the Lord to come!
      Blessings!

  3. Greetings Preciuous Sister in the lord,
Amen. That first paragraph say's it all.
I also was happy to hear you say "when I was truly saved". I think we share similar back grounds. There is a scripture that say's; I have been saved, I am saved, I am being saved ! I apply this to myself, because I was, but then i wasnt, but then I was saved, and now I am saved, lol. Funny that the Pastor I follow believes OSAS, but he quoted this script the other day. And my Sister, I mentioned the other day, they will quote this as well ? So it appears that not all OSAS align with Calvinism ?

I'll add my personal experience when I saw FEAR ! This is not indifferent to the several things you mentioned but maybe one to add to the list.
I had got myself involved with some bad folks, I was a bad folk. We sold drugs. We got busted as an "organized crime ring". believe me, I was anything but organized, but there were some at the top of this gang that were. Anyway the court wanted to lock us up and throw away the key !!! At that I was filled with fear. No, it wasnt fear of punishment, although I was scared of that, but it was fear that I had finally done it, I had finally crossed the line with God, and I would be cut off from His presence. I feared being prominently lost, removed from His presence. I prayed that night, Lord if you will deliver me from this, I will serve you all the rest of my life. Three days later we appeared in court. Two vans full of drugs and weapons had disappeared, and the Judge said reluctantly he had no alternative than to dismiss all charges ! Hallelujah ! And here I am, in the arms of my Savior. Ya know the fear of the Lord will set you free !
    Christ's peace !

    1. Yes, there are many OSAS people out there, not necessarily Calvinists...
When I read your story, I shook my head. I just can't imagine you doing those things, Brother! How the Lord has changed you! (And me!) And WOW what an answer to your prayer! That fear turned out to be your saving fear! Blessings!
