Welcome to the final day of the Pre-Release party for Forsaken Dreams!!! Every Friday this month I've posted something about the book and chosen a winner from among the comments. This week's winner is: Amanda Stanley (chosen by random.org) Congratulations, Amanda!!
If you haven't won yet, don't despair! You have one more chance this week when we play "Guess what the character will say next" ! This is by far my favorite game to play in these parties. It's always fun to see what everyone chooses. Here's how it works. If you've read all the posts this month so far, you should have a pretty good idea of who the main hero and heroine of the story are...their personalities and strengths and weaknesses. Below I took an excerpt from the book wherein Blake and Eliza are having a conversation. At the end I ask you to choose what you think the hero, Blake would say next. Whether or not you choose the right answer has NO bearing on whether you can win the book. (Don't forget to leave your email in your comment!)
Okay, here we go. I won't provide an introduction but will let the scene speak for itself.
Okay, here we go. I won't provide an introduction but will let the scene speak for itself.
Swerving around, she knelt before him
and placed a tray on the cot. “This will hurt a bit, Colonel. Would you care to
bite down on a piece of wood?”
“I’ll manage, thank you.”
She drew a deep breath and threaded the
needle. “How did this happen? Seems an odd thing to occur while hunting for
pigs.”
“Boar.” Her scent filled his nose,
tantalizing his senses. Blake cleared his throat. “I was hacking through the
jungle when my blade slipped.”
“Hmm.” She slid the needle through his
flesh.
It felt like she’d set his skin on fire.
Blake closed his eyes, listening to the slap of water on the hull, the
hammering and shouts from above, the screech of pelicans. Anything to distract
him from the searing pain.
She must have noticed his discomfort for
she uttered a “sorry” that sounded genuine.
Yet the pain was nothing compared to the
suffering she had already caused him. “Pains of the flesh I can handle,” he
muttered.
She met his gaze and swallowed before
continuing her work. “I never meant to deceive you.”
Blake had never seen such lustrous eyes.
“You didn’t even tell me your real name. How can that be unintentional?”
She slipped the needle through and
tugged on the thread. Her lower lip trembled. “You are right. I should have
been truthful.” She continued stitching his wound, but Blake could no longer
feel the pain for the agony in his heart. He’d hardened himself to it.
“But then you wouldn’t have let me join
your venture, would you?” she asked.
Lantern light crowned her head and
glistened on her moist lips—lips he had almost kissed. He licked his own. “No.”
“I had to get away.” She clipped the
thread and tied it. Then dipping her fingers into a poultice, she spread it
over the stitches.
“We all needed to get away.” Blake
couldn’t tear his eyes from the way her delicate fingers caressed his skin.
“From Yankees.” He sighed. “You betrayed everyone on board.” Good, now the
anger returned.
She cut a swath of bandage and wrapped
it around his leg. “I was born and raised a Southerner just like everyone else
on this ship.” She looked up at him. Her breath filled the air between them,
her eyes just inches from his face.
Blake looked away from the pain he saw
in her gaze. He offered a caustic snort. “At least some of your story was
true.”
“It was all true.” Her eyes narrowed.
“Everything I told you about my past. I simply changed the names and omitted
one year of my life.”
“A year in which you betrayed your
country.”
She jerked the bandage tight. Blake hid
the pain from his face. With a huff, she gathered her tray and stood, turning
her back to him. “Doesn’t my service as a war nurse count for anything?”
“Ah, so you hoped to make restitution.”
She spun around, her skirts knocking a
tin cup to the deck with a clank. “No, that’s not why I served.”
“Why didn’t you just stay with your husband’s
family? I hear the Yanks love Southern traitors.”
“They tossed me out, if you must know.”
She stooped to pick up the cup, her skirts billowing around her. “Although I
wouldn’t have stayed anyway. They hated me for my Southern ties as much as you
hate me for my Northern.”
Blake tore his gaze from her, clenching
his jaw against his rising sympathy, despite his best efforts to push it down.
Setting his injured leg on the deck, Blake
rose, ignored the pain, and headed for the door.
Now, choose what you think Blake said as he left the room
A. "You've given me much to consider, Mrs. Crawford. Thanks for tending my wound."
B. "Perhaps someday, Mrs. Crawford, just not yet."
C. “I will never forgive you, Mrs. Crawford. Or any Yankee.”
D. "How can I not forgive you after all God has forgiven me?"

Have a GREAT weekend!!
Have a GREAT weekend!!
I am going to go with C: mostly as I get the sense that Blake is a man quick to lighting the fire inside his belly, and slower to smodder the ashes,... I think he might speak out in haste, reflect on it lateron, and change the stubborness of his heart, because he's not a man that strikes me as one that trusts 'easily' or 'forgives' openly.
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed getting to know the characters of your books, and I keep tabs on their availability on Powells + the Book Depository, in case I do not win! :) :) Congratulations on such a wicked sweet launch this month! I cannot wait to meet Blake & Eliza in person as I read their story! :)

ps: I love how this scene brought me back to "Master & Commander" one of my favourite historic epic motion pictures!! I never could decide it my heart went for the Captain or the Doctor! Such a choice!
Blake is starting to come around, so it might be B. But I really don't think he'd actually say that out loud yet, he doesn't want to admit he'd consider forgiving her. So my answer is C.

Fri Feb 22nd,
ReplyDelete"Morning, MaryLu."
Wow .... B and C are a real toss-up for me. Both sound reasonable -- considering his anger and hatred of the North.
"B" doesn't sound so condemning ... like Blake might just be "coming around" to forgiving Eliza's deception.
But ... I think I will have to go with "C" -- as his anger and unforgiveness have great hold over him at this moment in time. Yes, "C" is my final answer.
This was fun, yet again.
Have a great weekend everyone.
Take care, and, God Bless,
In Him, Brenda
I agree with the other ladies - a decision between b and c. But, I'll have to go with c. I think Blake may have alomost been able to say b, but as he gets up I think he's not quite ready to do so. Much anger seems to be simmering under his skin.
ReplyDeleteI like these two - can't wait to meet them between the pages! :)
Thanks for the fun with this, MaryLu!

I'm going with
ReplyDeleteB. "Perhaps someday, Mrs. Crawford, just not yet."
mamabunny13 @ gmail dot com
This is my favorite game to play as well. According to your past description of Blake one of his weaknesses is being unforgiving, so I'll go with "C". You've definitely whet my appetite after reading this scene. Can't wait for more.

Wow, this is so fun! After reading the scene and judging by what my 'compassionate' heart would say, I was going to say "B" but then I read the comments and everyone else said "C" :)! Since this sounds as if they are already at their destination (he was hunting for pigs) and not just sailing, I would say this scene is farther along in the story, giving Blake time to warm up to Eliza (which it sounds like he came close to). I, after all that mouthful, still think I'm gonna go with "B". :) Sorry for the long post; I've confused myself now. At least we had mulitiple choice, because I would have said the scene ended right there, without dialogue!

I am going with C - Blake does not seem to be the type of person to forgive and forget - at least not easily!
ReplyDeleteSo looking forward to reading the book!!
SO much fun. :) My guess is B.
ReplyDeleteinspiringdaring (at) yahoo (dot) com
I am going with C. He has a lot of bitterness in his heart towards the North and he doesn't want to forgive. But I also think it is hard for him to say that to her, because deep down he wants to forgive her, but his anger prevents it. I can not wait to read this book!
ReplyDeleteNancycooks4u@gmail.com
C. “I will never forgive you, Mrs. Crawford. Or any Yankee.”
ReplyDeleteoh, gracious! What a gorgeous cover. And your hero and heroine inspiration are yummy! I would have to guess B. This is a must read!
ReplyDeleteHm... I would say probably B or C... but I suspect it's C, because he seems to want to hold on to his anger... at least at this time.
ReplyDeletekate.danahy@gordon.edu
I'm gonna go with D.
ReplyDeleteCampbellamyd at Gmail dot com
Looks great! I'm going to have to go with B. =)
ReplyDeletelubell1106(at)gmail(dot)com
My guess is B.
ReplyDeletefancynoodle@yahoo.ca
I'm going with my first reaction, which is B...mainly because I think that's what will happen, not because I think he's ready (in actuality, I think a more realistic response at this point is C) but because that's what I want him to say, B is my choice.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this last chance to win a copy of your book!
karen@fallotfam.com
I'm having fun! I guess it would be:
ReplyDelete"Perhaps someday, Mrs. Crawford, just not yet."
Thank you for the giveway! beautiful cover!
Hmm! I'm leaning towards "C", but "B" could be a possibility, also.
ReplyDeleteGreat scene, by the way!
As always, I can't wait to read this. :)
I am guessing A.
ReplyDeleteI hope my book gets here today!
I think the answer is "C" - he still seems to have anger in his heart. Thanks for the opportunity to win a copy of your book!

ReplyDeleteHi MaryLu :-) Thank you so much!! I can't wait to read Forsaken Dreams!!
I just sent you an email because I realized I gave you the wrong email address on last Fridays post! My CORRECT email address is joycomethatdawn{at}gmail{dot}com
THANK YOU, MaryLu!!!

ReplyDeleteecriggs1990(at)aol(dot)com
ReplyDeletePlease put my name in again for this book. I would love to win it. I think he said ( D.) How can I not forgive you after all God has forgiven me?
Maxie mac262(at)me(dot)com
"A" and I do hope I am the "Miss Randomly Chosen" this time. :)
ReplyDeleteI am going to go with B.
ReplyDeletecostaricagirl2@yahoo.com
I think I agree with Chaplain Debbie and am going with 'A'. "You've given me much to consider, Mrs. Crawford. Thanks for tending my wound." MaryLu, thanks for the last four weeks of fun. Looking forward to reading this new adventure of yours. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's D. Has to be D...

Considering the conflict of anger and sympathy warring within Blake, I would think B an appropriate response. However given the dialogue between Eliza and Blake, I would venture to assume that Blake is not willing to let down his guard because he's been hurt by someone he cares for (even if he doesn't want to admit it yet) and he wants to stay angry at Eliza a bit longer, not willing to release forgiveness to Eliza just yet, so C is my answer.
ReplyDeleteMy answer is C :)
christimaly@yahoo.com
I want to say B... but C seems like the right answer thus far in the story... B or C... B or C... B or C...????
ReplyDeleteOK... I'm going with B! heehee ...
Can't wait to read this book!!!

vanessahj11@yahoo.com
I think the answer is A. It's polite given the fact that she tended his leg. It also makes her think he will consider her apology, and he appears to be proper while he weighs it in his mind and heart.
ReplyDeleteamccalli(at)gmail(dot)(com)
My guess is C...can't wait to read the whole book!
ReplyDeleteTiffamir@att.net
I choose B
ReplyDeleteThanks for the opportunity to enter the contest

My guess is C. The others seem too nice for what just happened. Lol :D
ReplyDeleteLove this! Sneak peek and suspense all in one!!
I'm going with B! shopgirl152nykiki(at)yahoo(dot)com
ReplyDeleteI have to say B. I hope it all works out.
ReplyDeletemarypres(AT)gmail(DOT)com
I believe the answer is most likely C.
ReplyDeleteIt seems from the flow of the scene that it would be this answer from how he is acting. He doesn't want to forgive a Northerner and he doesn't want to feel anything for her because of that, so instead he's pushing her away and not letting go of his anger.
brpchristiangirl@charter.net
I'm going with C.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to read this book.
chellb[dot]chellb[at]gmail[dot]com
C. seems like the appropriate choice. With how the scene was flowing and the attitude of the characters it seems he would choose some harsh words at this point because he's rather push her away than have feelings for her due to him not forgiving. He certainly doesn't want to forgive the North or anyone that sided with them.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to read your book!!! :)
(Oh and I commented on this post once, but it seems my comment isn't on here for some reason... glad I came back and checked.)
