Is Lordship Salvation a Heresy?

I don't hang around with theologians, and I haven't been to a congregational church in over 6 years, so some of these terms are new to me. However, recently, a pastor I listen to mentioned "Lordship Salvation" and said there were many in today's Christian community who oppose it. If you don't know what it is, here's a few definitions I found:

The doctrine of lordship salvation teaches that submitting to Christ as Lord goes hand-in-hand with trusting in Christ as Savior.

Followers of Lordship Salvation insist that a person is eternally saved not only by believing in Jesus Christ as Savior, but also by committing completely to Him as the Lord or Master of one's life.

The view that a person must accept Jesus as both Lord and Savior at the point of salvation

MaryLu Here: In other words, Lordship Salvation consists of not only an intellectual belief but also submitting to Jesus as Lord of one's life in obedience to His will. It involves continual repentance of sin and a daily walk with the Lord that produces fruit in a person's life as they are transformed into the image of Jesus.

However, this belief has many opponents who say that Lordship salvation is a heresy that spits on the Grace of God by adding to the belief in Jesus extra things a person must do, therefore adding human works to the equation.

Here's one such comment from an article online by David J. Stewart

The heresy is called Lordship Salvation, which says that in order to be saved a person must forsake sinful behavior, make full surrender to Christ, declare Jesus as Lord and confess Him before men. There are many variations of the heresy, but in each case human effort is added to faith in Jesus Christ.

And another quote from the holytext.org

Lordship Salvation is the teaching that you must surrender your life to Jesus to be saved or that if you are saved you will have works to prove it. The Bible is clear to say that all we have to do is believe the gospel and the gospel is the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ as payment for all our sins.

And another from a site called jesus-is-savior.com

LORDSHIP SALVATION is the false doctrine that a sinner MUST be willing to stop living a sinful lifestyle or to give up the sinful world to be saved.

MaryLu Here: I actually had to stop searching for quotes. I was feeling ill and my spirit was grieved. I knew there were so-called Christians who believe you can claim faith in Jesus and then go about your life sinning and doing whatever you want and still be saved, also known as Once Saved Always Saved, but I had no idea that there were actual "Christians" who believe that you don't have to make Jesus Lord, don't have to repent or do anything at all, don't have to  even confess Him before men, in order to be saved. In fact, you can just keep on sinning and sinning! HUH?

This is exactly the kind of thing that really irks me and surely must cause much sorrow to Jesus. I just do not understand how any of these people can read the Bible, I mean read the entire Bible, and still come away with such a heretical belief. Either they are hearing this crap from a pastor or teacher or they are just pulling out verses here and there and creating a doctrine out of them.

Nearly Every time I open my Bible to read, it talks about submission, obedience, forsaking sin, and following Jesus. The theme of repentance and obedience is throughout the entire Bible! From Adam and Eve in the garden to Noah, Abraham, Moses, the Israelites, the prophets, all through the Psalms, the Proverbs, Job, then of course the entire New Testament and all the letters from the Apostles, concluding with Revelation where those who REFUSED TO REPENT were cast into the lake of fire.

People who refute Lordship salvation say that it is adding works to salvation by faith alone, but it isn't adding works at all. Obedience to the Lord is not Works, Committing to follow Jesus is not works, repenting of one's sins is not a work!  That's insane. Works are things we try to do to earn our salvation as many other religions require such as Islam and Catholicism. Works are good things we do or rituals we perform in order to gain salvation. Things such as charity work, attending church, tithing, communion, confession, feeding the poor. All good things, but in and of themselves, they won't get you to heaven. Bowing our knee to Jesus and doing our best to obey His commands have nothing to do with works.
Think of salvation as a marriage, which it is by Biblical definition. After you get married, is being faithful to your spouse and not cheating on them an extra work you do or is it something that is assumed by the act of making a commitment?

What does the word Lord mean? a person who has authority, control, or power over others. It is someone over you in power, someone you obey
Does Jesus require anything from us after we get saved? Of course! Why else did Paul and the other Disciples write all those letters to the churches?  Why not just keep writing that all you need to do is believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved. Done deal.  But what if we looked up the meaning of the word "believe". Let's take the famous verse John 3:16

For God so loved the World that He gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him would not perish but have everlasting life.

The word believes here is the Greek word
pisteuō which means: to believe, to commit to, to be committed unto

When you commit to someone, you are pledging yourself to them, as in a marriage vow. You are committing your fidelity, your love.

He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.” John 14:21

If you obey someone's commands, they that sure sounds like they are your Lord.

that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; Romans 10:9

For to this end Christ died and rose and lived again, that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living. Romans 14:9

That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord Philippians 2:10

“If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.  Matthew 16:25

And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. Matthew 10:38

I could on and on and on with multiple Scriptures about not living a sinful life, of being constantly filled with the Holy Spirit, of confessing our sins to the Lord, of deny ourselves and offering our bodies as a sacrifice to Jesus, of how we are dead to self and flesh and alive to Jesus, how those who live according to the flesh are not true children of God.

I challenge anyone to read the first three chapters of Revelation which are the 7 letters from JESUS to the seven churches and tell me that all one needs to do to be saved is have a mental belief that Jesus died and rose again. After that Jesus requires nothing else, that we can go on and live our lives any way we choose.

Jesus suffered here on earth more than any man alive. Not only was he constantly hunted during his 3 year ministry, he was hated, spit on, rejected, and lied about. He had to endure heat, hunger, exhaustion, pain, filth and being surrounded by unbelief. Then, he was chained up overnight, beat, spit on, mocked, and then scourged with a whip that was embedded with sharp pieces of metal. It tore the skin from his body and dug into his muscles. The Scriptures say He was unrecognizable as a man. But that wasn't all. He then had to carry a wooden cross that has been estimated to have been over 300 pounds on a back that had no skin on it. He was stripped of his clothes, naked for all to see and then had nails driven through his wrists and his ankles. Once he was erected, his body would slowly die, his lungs would begin to collapse and he would have to try and push himself up to breathe, which of course only caused more pain. They say crucifixion is one of the most painful and slow methods of dying. And all the while He hung there, he was mocked and belittled and laughed at.

And at any moment, He had the power to call down a thousand angels to rescue Him and destroy His enemies. He had to only think it and it would have been done.

He did that for you! He did that for me. He did that for anyone who would come to Him, repent of their sins, believe and commit to Him, trust Him for their salvation and follow Him. A FREE gift of salvation, completely unearned. A gift of grace and mercy.

And you are telling me that it's perfectly okay to say "Thanks Jesus", take your gift and then go back to living life for yourself and committing all kinds of sins that Jesus died to pay for?  You think that making Him Lord, that repenting and following Him is somehow a heresy? Then you don't know Jesus, and you don't know your Bible, your whole Bible. Yes, Salvation is a free gift, but it comes at a price.   Your life is not your own. You have been bought with a huge price.

For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. 1 Corinthians 6:20

Jesus is Lord! And if He is not your Lord, then you're in trouble. Everyone serves someone in this life--yourself, the devil, or Jesus. Two of them don't work out so well in the end.

  1. Preach it, Marylu! Amen and amen!🙏

  2. I too was starting to get sick to my stomach upon reading the mention quotes above. It absolutely blows my mind the total deception and apostasy from the modern day church (not everyone) and people who say they are Christians. I was reading (or I may have heard it) that the Methodist Church in England was taking a vote to accept same sex marriage in their congregation. The psycho-babble the so called pastor was giving for her reasoning just left me with my mouth wide open. I couldn’t believe it. I don’t think The Lord can take much more of this. I am in no way ashamed to say that I make Jesus my Savior and Lord and live the way He instructs us. In agreement with the above commenter, preach it!!

    1. We are surely living in the last days.. the dead church and the lukewarm church. It blows my mind they anti-God things they accept these days. Like you I will never be ashamed to say I follow Jesus as my LORD! Blessings!

  4. The truth of the matter is that if you are saved as a child of God filled with the Holy Spirit and accept Jesus as lord and savior you no longer want to sin and if you do that little thing called a conscience kicks in. IE the Holy Spirit in you let's you know so you can repent of it and know that it's wrong. Pam

    1. Yup. Exactly. So, makes me wonder about these people who say you don't have to follow Jesus or make Him Lord, who continue to live life on their terms. Are they even saved?

    2. Well, that’s what I have been saying all along. They probably aren’t saved. If you are truly born again, how do you become unborn? Do babies crawl back into the womb? No. License to sin folks are just trying to have their cake and eat it too, as the old saying goes.

    3. Yes, I'm being slightly persuaded to our point of view Cheryl. I was reading Romans 8 and it's clear that if you have the Holy Spirit leading you, you don't want to lead a life of sin. So people who claim Jesus but continue to live in sin do not have the Holy Spirit. I still think people can walk away based on Hebrews 6, but it would take a lot. Anyway, I feel bad for people who believe they can live any way they want. They think they are saved, but they are the ones to whom Jesus will say "I never knew you."

    4. I agree, it’s tragic. They care more about this life than the one to come. But I just keep praying for my lost family. I believe those prayers go a long way. I went to see my father in assisted living last week. He can’t walk or even raise himself up. I told him I think Jesus is coming soon, and he looked annoyed. At least he didn’t yell at me. I can’t imagine being unable to live, and unable to die, but not hoping Jesus is coming soon. I don’t get it.

    5. If people only knew how wonderful heaven is and how horrific hell is and that we all live in either place forever. I'm so sorry about your Dad. Is he a believer? If so, I would think your statement would excite him. It's hard to understand how so many Christians aren't excited about the Lord's return. I have many lost or lukewarm family members too. Prayer is powerful and effective!

    6. My father claims to be a believer, but I am not sure. As I was leaving, the cleaning lady was upset because she had interrupted us, not knowing I was visiting. She said she knew he was going to cuss her out. It just made me sad.

    7. I'm so sorry, Cheryl. I will lift up a prayer for him now.. for his salvation

  6. Jesus cannot be your Savior if he is not your Lord. If he isn't your Lord then something else is. "Away from me you evildoer. I never knew you." ~Jesus

  7. You continue to attack the Catholic Church in error. Catholics do not add works to gain salvation. In fact Catholics and Lutherans have agreed on the doctrine of Salvation as a free gift but faith without works is dead.

    1. I believe there are many in the Catholic church who are truly saved, but the entire church is based on pagan rituals and the worship of a goddess. You need to really dig into the past of the Catholic church. In addition many Catholics have told me that if they don't go to confession, if they don't partake of communion, they will go to hell. I have no hatred or animosity toward Catholics. I love my Catholic brothers and sisters. My job here is to warn you. Get out of it while you can. I have no more time to be tender with people's feelings. Time is short. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKwYOK4Pcyk&list=WL&index=26&t=3338s

    2. We don't need a warning to get out of the Catholic Church. It is one of the great Christian faiths. This is the church that put together the books of the Bible. Yes there was a Church before the bible existed. If you truly want to know read the Catholic Catechism and you will be blessed beyond measure. Quit spreading anti-Catholic propaganda.

    3. If you don't repent and confess your grave sins and you don't have a intimate communion with Jesus you will go to hell. The Church sacraments were founded for this purpose.

  8. A thought came to mind. A couple of years ago there was a pastor of a church in Maryland who renounced his faith. I'm don't know if you had heard of him or not. His name is Joshua Harris. He authored a book called I Kissed Dating Goodbye back in the early 2000's I think.
Anyway, this was a pastor who renounced his faith and even apologised to the LGBTQ community. 🤦 for speaking out against them.
I'm questioning if he even was a true follower of Jesus Christ if he was able to abandon his family and the church. How in the world can ANYBODY abandon the faith if you truly had the Holy Spirit in you!? So mind boggling!

    1. Yes, I remember him. My daughter had read his book. He is just one of many famous Christians who have walked away. Like you, I'm baffled that anyone who had any kind of relationship with Jesus could walk away, but I believe it's possible. Hebrews 6 describes a person who was Holy Spirit filled.... but who then rejected Jesus. So very sad.

  9. Good post Sister! So many take their relationship with Jesus casually, their comments, "well I believe!" And of course, so does satan and his demons! that is not a ticket to salvation by all means. It's relationship 100% with Jesus. He walks with me, He talks with me and He tells me I am His own... Our works aren't done for awards and kudos, it's because we are a changed Creation in HIM and want to walk in His beautiful, loving footsteps. It's an honor to please our Lord. It's a gift to fellowship with Him and know He is always here with us. It makes me so sad knowing so many believing they are in great standing with Jesus, and go about sinning with no remorse or accountability. No repentance. Good wake up call. I know there were some that really needed to read this one. Shake em awake.. love you eternally through Jesus our Lord and Savior Cillie

  10. Just because we don't like the fact that there are many carnal Christians (about 99%) doesn't mean they are not saved. God justified the believer through the blood atonement of Jesus Christ. It is God who "justifies the ungodly." When God sees a born-again believer, he sees the IMPUTED righteousness of Christ in that believer. Lordship salvationists don't like the fact that God imputes the perfect righteousness of Christ into any and every believer, declares him not guilty, glorifies him, and seat him with Christ in the heavenlies. We may think it's not "fair," but to a God that demands sinless perfection, all have sinned and don't deserve any good from God either. We need to be careful about damning the very people God purchased with his blood and justified. If God says they're justified, then we accept his gracious declaration as we thank God for declaring us sinners just as well.

    1. Wow 99%! The church is in worse trouble than I thought. I'm not condemning anyone. That's God's job on judgement day. Just as you tell me not to judge them, then why are you saying they are justified in God's eyes? None of us can know a person's heart. We can judge their fruit but whether they are saved or not is up to the Lord. My point here was to warn people against being lukewarm and not being a true follower of Jesus, which includes repentance and walking in obedience. I will never stop warning people because I care about them. I love them and I warn them and I will continue shouting it from the rooftops if only to wake up as many as I can. When people like you tell Christians they are imputed with Christ's righteousness and they don't have to make Jesus Lord or follow Him, then you are putting them in grave danger, should they take your advice and continue purposely sinning without repentance or a walk with the Lord. If I am wrong, then the only result is getting more Christians to be more fruitful for the Lord. If you are wrong, people could end up in hell.
