Matthew 24 is often called by theologians the spine of Eschatology (End Times prophecy). Which essentially means it is used as the springboard to all other End Times Scriptures throughout the Bible. Similar passages are found in Mark and Luke, but Matthew 24 goes into more detail.
In verse 3, the Disciples asked Jesus 3 Questions: Tell us, when will this take place, and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age? Jesus then goes into a lengthy description of events that will occur slightly before the Tribulation, during the Tribulation, at the mid-point of the Tribulation and then all the way up to His Second Coming found here in verse 30
Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn and beat their breasts and lament in anguish, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Let's look at the word "coming" in this verse. It's the Greek Word Erchomai It means: " to come from one place to another, and used both of persons arriving and of those returning; to appear, make one's appearance, come before the public
Then verse 31 describes how Jesus's angels will gather all the saints together.
And he shall send his Angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect, from the four winds, and from the one end of the heavens unto the other.
Some people think this is the rapture, but notice He gathers the elect not only from the Earth but the Heavens as well. These are the people already in heaven and those of us who were earlier raptured. And I'll prove it to you below.
Verse 32 is very interesting. It starts out with the Greek Word δέ
It translates poorly into English as "Now, then, and" but if you look it up, it indicates a change of topic.
The Greek word δέ (dé) primarily functions as a conjunction or conjunctive particle, and its most common English translations include but, and, then, or now. It can indicate a shift in thought, a continuation, or a contrast within a sentence or discourse, marking the superaddition of a clause, whether in opposition or in continuation, to what has preceded.
In other words, it can mean a complete shift in topic. It would be like saying "Now, let's talk about something else."
32: Now learn the parable of the fig tree: when her bough is yet tender, and it putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near.
Jesus goes on to talk about the days of Noah and then he describes the rapture in verses 40-41
At that time two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding at the hand mill; one will be taken and one will be left..
Let me make a brief note about the words used here. In both cases the word for Taken is the Greek Word paralambanō, which means to take to, to take with one's self, to join to one's self as an associate, a companion
The Greek Word for Left is aphiēmi which means to forsake, send away as a husband divorcing a wife, to disregard, let go
So, don't let anyone tell you that the people who leave in the rapture are the bad people, the sinners, the reprobates. And yes, I've heard some pastors preach that.
Let me get to my main point: Before Jesus describes the rapture, He compares the end times to the Days of Noah
But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.
Do you know what the Greek Word "coming" in this sentence means? It's a completely different word from the one used above when Jesus describes His Second Coming. It is Parousia which means Presence, Arrival, being near. Whereas the one in the prior verse, erchomai, is more about the physical action of coming and going. Honestly, they are both very close in meaning, but I found it fascinating that a different word was used in the verse about Noah and the rapture!
Greek words carry much more meaning than our English words. For example there are at least 4 distinct words in Greek that mean love, each one describing a different kind of love.
Here's another example relating to the rapture.
. And the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to give birth, to devour her Child as soon as it was born. She bore a male Child who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron. And her Child was caught up to God and His throne. Revelation 12:4-5
You can find an indepth study of this verse in a post I made 8 years ago.
The first child in the verse underlined is the Greek Word Teknon Meaning: daughter, son, figuratively used as children of God
The second Child in bold is the Greek Word huios
Meaning: son, kingshiip, Son of Man, Son of God, Son of David, my beloved Son. This word stressed the quality and essence of one so resembling another that distinctions between the two are indiscernible
Meaning: son, kingshiip, Son of Man, Son of God, Son of David, my beloved Son. This word stressed the quality and essence of one so resembling another that distinctions between the two are indiscernible
The last child in red in the passage is back to the word Teknon.
It's obvious that John was talking about 2 very different children here. One being the children of God and the other being the Son of God. Jesus was never caught up to the throne of God. Caught up is the Greek Word Harpazo. Meaning: to Snatch or catch away, take by force
My point? The Children of God are caught up to heaven as in raptured. Those that are taken are taken as companions and friends. That event is a different event from the second coming when Jesus places His feet on the Mount of Olives. I could list a dozen more Scriptural reasons why these two "comings" are very different events. But I'll stop for now.
We got all of that just by studying the true Greek Meanings of the words!
I love the Bible. It's so rich and amazing. We could never in this life discover all its treasures!
We serve an amazing God!
Once our Pastor had said those being taken were not being raptured. I don’t think many in our church believe that, if they did we wouldn’t stay there. I think he is human and is searching, obviously in the wrong places. He has children who are teens now and I’m thinking he doesn’t want to believe the rapture is soon. He may be one who thinks rapture believers are just wanting to escape. He avoids discussing the topic and never teaches on the end times.( he has said he doesn’t know what will happen). I would leave if I didn’t already know things I need to know.I am surprised how many want to dismiss the rapture- why not believe it will happen? Why do Christians see this as a subject of contention? I know the enemy loves for us to argue and be confused.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy reading your blog and learning more every time.
Thank you!
I think that the Rapture may be sensitive to some Christians, but that may distinguish between potential true or false believers. Since the Rapture is a “catching away,” it should actually be a blessing considering all that is going on in the world right now and the multitude of signs pointing out that an unthinkable evil is coming. Think Digital ID, AI Global Surveillance, and of course, the Mark of the Beast (MOB), which is basically a permanent one-way ticket to Hell.
DeleteSometimes I assess Believers as to whether they believe in End Times. My neighbor understands some End Times prophecy, but most do not acknowledge it or try to change the subject upon hearing it. It is totally possible that they still love this world to the point they are not willing to leave it behind or give up anything in it. Jesus said to “deny oneself, carry their cross, and follow Me” in Matthew 16:24.
I think your pastor might be concerned for his children’s futures that he may be refusing to believe the Rapture is near. I pray the Lord will make him realize soon that once the real evil grabs hold of the world upon the Tribulation starting (once the Antichrist signs the “peace covenant” prophesied in Daniel 9:27), it will be a world that no one would want to live in, and no one would ever wish it on their worst enemies, maybe except for those who delight in sin and evil are internally loyal to the Devil.
It is said that once the Raptured make it to Heaven and they see how beautiful and wonderful everything is along with how loving the residents are, they will not want to leave/go back to Earth. The best part is that they will have glorified/immortalized bodies and will live through the Millennium Reign and beyond in the New Jerusalem (New Heaven and New Earth). That would fulfill God’s ultimate promise of eternal life to all those who love Him.
I'm sorry to hear that about your pastor. It breaks my heart that some people who are supposed to be shepherding their flock are doing the opposite. I don't know his heart, only God does, but please be careful. He may be one of those who, after the rapture, tells people that the AC is Jesus returning. I believe Satan is the one who has made the rapture and end times so controversial. My last pastor refused to preach on it because it was "scary". Good grief! You have to get rid of half the Bible if you don't want to preach things that are scary or uncomfortable.
DeleteI truly believe that anyone who knows about the rapture but doesn't want to go yet is in love with the world and the things of the world, and because of that, God will leave them to their idols. Sad. Pray for your pastor and for all the lukewarm. I have many in my own family! Blessings!
I'm ashamed/embarrassed to admit that I always thought the rapture and second coming were the same thing. It wasn't until I read your posts explaining they are two separate events before that sank in.
ReplyDeleteNo need to be embarrassed, Amy! This is not taught in most churches today. I only discovered it by reading the Bible over and over with the help of the Holy Spirit.
DeleteHello Sister in Christ,
ReplyDeleteOne method I use to distinguish between the Rapture and Second Coming is connecting it with His presence 2000 years ago. During his ministry, He came TO His own; during the Rapture, He comes FOR His own; and during the Second Coming, He comes WITH His own (we will be returning with Him for the Millennium Reign). Could it be that after the Seventh Bowl, the Lord will return soon after along with all the saved with glorified bodies? I believe we will help Him set up for the Millennium Reign, but would we automatically know how to? As in we do not need to be taught or given instructions what to do - we will automatically be capable of doing so. I am not in no way smart or capable, but that will be when it will not matter anymore, would it?
In the ensuing chaos following the Rapture, will the AC immediately begin roaming the world to make peace in different countries? I believe this may be the route to get all countries to believe he really is the prophesied Messiah, but then the “peace” will be broken halfway through the Tribulation and that is when the MOB will be enforced. Could this be why per the news this morning, the National Guard was deployed to D.C. by the President to take over the police department? Maybe it is part of the plan to set up the Gestapo-like police force to locate and hunt down any dissidents in the world during the Tribulation?
For loved ones that are left behind, would our constant praying, both on Earth and in Heaven be sufficient in having the Lord protect them during the Tribulation? I believe there are Scriptural stories telling that God protected certain people and their families during times of judgment and destruction - could it be the same case with the Tribulation?
Peace and Gratitude Sister for keeping us encouraged with the Rapture and that we are going home soon. I am still hoping it is this year - do you agree based on all that we are seeing right now? Keep looking up for there is only six weeks until the UN Conference and of course, Rosh Hashanah. Take care and Blessings from a Brother in Christ.
Brother, that's a great way to distinguish the rapture from the 2nd coming! As far as us knowing how to help the Lord set up His Kingdom, I'm sure He will assign duties to each of us according to our abilities and if we don't know something, He will train us. How smart you were here on Earth will not matter at all!
DeleteYes. the AC will bring a false peace to the entire world after we are gone and people will worship him for it. And yes, Trump's military takeover of cities is just the beginning of the Beast empire being able to subjugate all its citizens. I'm surprised Trump is getting away with it, actually.
Yes! I believe our prayers now and in heaven for our loved ones are highly powerful and effective and will help them during the Tribulation to not only find Jesus but get fed, healed, and protected. Even if they end up being martyred, God will be with them.
Like you, I am still believing it is this year! But I'm leaving the timing in God's perfect hands!
Blessings!
Greetings Precious Deciferer of the Greek :) lol
ReplyDeleteI do this to with the Hebrew and Greek. I study in Blue Letter Bible and it has all this info. So I can read from my Bible and follow along with KJV on their page, and flip back and forth between scripture and language's without having to lose my page. Love it.
But it can be a tongue twister at times, and I prod along slowly. So thanks for putting this together like this Sister, Made it easy to understand.
I think in some ways, the Hebrew and Greek is like our Native Indians. Not in dialect, but in the sense that a single word can have the meaning of a sentence or two !
Now this is just my opinion, but I think we need to walk gently when we try to label who is a true believer or not based on what their beliefs are on the Rapture.
#1 our salvation is not contingent on how we understand many of the deep things we often discuss here. Our salvation is based on God's Grace, through faith in Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior, and not of ourselves.
#2 Our intelect has nothing to do with it. We dont think there are only "smart" people in Heaven, do we ? In fact God says He will confound the wisdom of the wise. In comparison to His omniscience, well, we've got a lot to learn.
Some of us saved can tend to get a bit boastful at times. I think where Paul says; no blasphemer, no idolator, etc, he should have added, no snob will inherit the Kingdom of God. :/
#3 Nobody but God knows for sure who is or is not saved, accept we who have beheld His glory :)
I do not like when pastors will have an alter call, or a field witnessing trip and say " we had 50 people accept Christ today. We dont know that. It would be better to say we witnessed to 50 people. Let God do the counting.
#4 I think some pastors are afraid of end times preaching because they are just not equipped with enough knowledge to preach on end times. Maybe that a blessing in disguise. At least they are smart enough to not preach what they dont know. Sadly, I think many decide they want to be pastors. But this is one job you cant just decide you want to do. A Pastor needs to be called by God to the ministry.
Great lesson Sister.
May the peace of Christ keep us all as we wait for our Prince to appear in the clouds.
Brother Joe, that's a great way to study Scripture. I think there's an ap that one can download where you can read the Scripture and then when you want to know the true Greek or Hebrew meaning, you just put your cursor on that word and it pops up. I need to find it.
DeleteI completely agree with you. We cannot know anyone's heart or whether they are truly saved or not. Only God does. But we can examine fruit. That should give us a clue. However belief in the rapture is not a condition for salvation.. perhaps in going in it, but not in being saved. And even the going part is up to the Lord.
God even says in His Word that He did not choose the wise of this world to be in His Kingdom. In fact, based on my experience, the smarter someone is, the harder it is for them to get saved.
Agree. Being a pastor is a calling, not something man can decide.
Blessings to you, Brother!
