LOST, the final season starts next week!

Okay, I'm going to admit something that may shock you. I'm a total LOST junkie. I love the show! I've watched every season twice now and would watch them again if my husband wouldn't have me committed!  For those of you who know my writing, you know I love the sea and the tropics and deserted islands, so when this show came on, I couldn't wait to try it. But after the first season,  it wasn't the setting that brought me back, it was the characters and the intense plot.

As a writer, I find this show fascinating. What a study in quirky characters! I mean, we have the overweight guy who works at a fast food restaurant who becomes an instant millionaire in the lottery; we have the hero doctor battling his identity under his alcoholic father; the murdering, convict beauty with a heart of gold, the conman who loves to read romances and cares about little babies; the X-iraqi torture expert; the paralized man who can suddenly walk; the man who's been on the island for years and never seems to age.  This list goes on and on and I haven't even told you the good stuff about these people yet.

Then you put this great cast of characters on this bizarre island that seems to have a life of its own and you add a plot that keeps your heart in your throat and one that you could never predict, and you have a great, great story.   I spend hours studying LOST for these very reasons, hoping to be able to convey such techniques into my own writing someday.

Bravo to the writers of LOST.  If you are a LOST fan, who is your favorite character and why?

  1. I was immediately mesmerized by Lost, loved the cast, but I had to give up on it. I missed an episode here and there and became utterly confused; this was made worse because the network played fast and loose with its place in the schedule for a long time. One of these days I'll have to borrow DVDs from someone.

  2. I'm looking forward to the last season of Lost...hoping to get answers to all those questions. I think my favorite characters are Charlie and Syid (not sure if I spelled that correctly) but of course I like Jack and Sawyer too. :D

  3. My sons and I just finished watching seasons 1-5 in anticipation for this last season. Just when I think I might have things figured out, my boys come up with something totally different. Can't wait to have it unfold this season!

  4. Yes, the show can be very confusing, especially if you miss an episode or two. It helped to watch them one after the other on DVD. My favorite character is Sawyer (the bad boy) but I also really like Hurley. I have no idea how they are going to end it! And that's what makes it so good.

I have no idea how they will end things, which is one of the reasons it is so good! My favorite character is Sawyer (the bad boy, of course!) but I also really like Hurley.

  7. I love Lost too! I like most all of the characters too! There's something unique about each one. However, I am still confused as to what's really going on and what will happen this year.

  8. My brothers got me and my parents into it. My family has been watching it on Netflix and we like it!

  9. Okay, so I respect your opinion about things a lot, so I decided I would try to watch it. My first place to go was Netflix, I just finished watching the first episode, and I am hooked. Unfortunately for my brothers (Who not 30 minutes prior told me the show was "Stupid") they are now hooked too. Ha, I am so happy right now! My brother is begging me to watch the second episode. I am smiling. So thank you for talking about it or I never would have watched it.

  11. I don't know how I feel about LOST. I mean I've never watched it because the commercials never really drew me in. But who knows? You all make it sound so much more interesting than the commercials lead on. I'll have to think about this one.

  12. I too am a total LOST junky, MaryLu. For those who want, CBS has many of the LOST shows available on their site. Thankfully for me, hubby is into the show too, so we watch it together.

I don't think I could pick a favorite character. Benjamin Linus is an amazing bad guy. Kate pulls on my heart strings. Sawyer makes me laugh and feel sorry for him all at once. Jack makes me pull for him. Hurley makes me want to hug him. Loved Charlie - was so sad when they cut him from the show. Oh and Jin - I love his expressions! LOL - can you tell I like this show?

I too have studied it from the perspective of a writer - the writer's of that show are AMAZING! But they've had some GREAT actors to help them portray their wonderful writing. Can't wait for the final season. :)

I don't know why but there is something about his character that I've alway's liked. He's handsome, strong, sometimes emotional, and sarcastic! What could be better! LOL!

  14. Oh yes, Amber, I'm a HUGE fan! In fact, I'm still mulling over all the implications of the season premier. Sawyer is irresistable, isn't he?

  15. Well! As a student of writing and plots, I have to say you've convinced me to give LOST a try. Of course living in S.A. I don't get to watch these series on TV much, and the episodes I did catch glimpses of just seemed weird. Someone told me that you have to watch it from the beginning in order to get into it, so I guess they were right. OK, I'm game.

  16. Yes, Diane, you must watch it from the beginning, otherwise, you'll feel lost. LOL
