Out of the pit of Corruption and Nothingness!

You have loved back my life from the pit of corruption and nothingness, for You have cast all my sins behind Your back.  Isaiah 38:17

In my morning time with God, we are reading through Isaiah in the Amplified version.  Last week, this verse nearly leapt off the page at me and I really felt I should share it with all of you. Sometimes we get so caught up in all the rules and functions, and theology of Christianity that we forget the simplicity of the gospel message.

That God's love is neverending, pure, unconditional, and unfathomable. That to Him, we are His Exceedingly Precious Children. That His love is the most powerful force in the world and it will NEVER fail.

You see, I was one of those rebellious kids wallowing in the filth of my own pit I had created. Corruption and Nothingness are perfect descriptors of my life without God. There was no purpose, no hope, no joy, and everything was corrupt, impure, unholy, and defiled--my marriage, my kids, my job, everything thought that filled my head.

I think it was Spurgeon who describes the unsaved as strolling down a muddy, manuer-laden path that is filled with biting poisonous snakes, but to them, it looks like a smooth path in the middle of a field of flowers.  That's the deception of Satan. I thought I was doing okay, making my own way in life, but little did I know that I was being bitten over and over again by snakes while I walked along a path that led over a cliff into the pit of hell.

So when Isaiah says that "God loved me back from the pit..."  That's exactly what He did. It was God's unconditional, all-encompassing love that lured me away from the path of destruction I was on. I shudder to think of where I'd be now if I hadn't answered His love song. Not only did He love me, but then He cast all my sins behind my back!!  Think about that for a minute. Everything you've ever done wrong, everything you're ashamed of is behind you.   And the further you walk with God, the further you travel from those sins until one day, you won't be able to see them anymore. You see, they can't follow you. They are left along the side of the road like the trash they are.

I don't know about you, but this quick reminder of God's love really encouraged me.  I hope it does you too.

  1. I, too, shudder to think where I would be without the forgiveness and love of God.

  2. Hey, I just came across this very verse last night, and even though I've read Isaiah a few times, it was the first time that it really jumped out at me!
When I sat back to think about it, I not only thought about the salvation stuff you talked about [though how you phrased it is a lot clearer :-)], but also the applications in the life of the already-Christian: God has plans for us, so he pulls our lives from the pit/path of corruption and nothingness, letting us achieve all the greatness He has planned for us, because He won't let us be slowed down by our sins, because He continually throws them behind His back, even the very moment that we commit them.
Thanks for posting this, MaryLu - it shows me that there must be reason that the verse jumped out at me. :-)

  3. July 26th ....
Heh MaryLu .... thanks so much for this "great reminder" ... of God's love for us !!! I absolutely love the photo beneath what you wrote .... Jesus enveloping the man ... total love, total acceptance, total forgiveness ! I know He loves me ... but, 'sometimes' the acceptance and the forgiveness parts ... are a tad more than I can even comprehend !!! However ... I do know better ! And, being rebellious in the past .... I am TOTALLY aware of the pit-and-mirey-clay I would still be in ... if it weren't for the Lord's great love and forgiveness !!!
Praise God for His unspeakable gift !
    Take care, and, God Bless,
    In Him, Brenda Hurley
