Health and Hymns!

This week I have two questions from Emma! And then I have some questions for you!!

Emma asks:  I know that you have said before that you are a health food nut, and I was curious about what types of food do you normally make for yourself? What are your favorite things to eat?

Okay, probably to most of the country, I'm a health food nut, but out here in California, there are a lot of nuts running around!  I'll tell you what a typical day's diet is for me.

  • Organic coffee with organic cream and Xylitol sweetener
  • Breakfast; 1 fruit/veggie smoothie ( Organic orange or apple, organic berries, organic coconut milk, Kefir, kale, spinach and Spirutein)  Yum!
  • Mid morning snack:  Handful of almonds or some fruit
  • Lunch:  Organic yogurt or Gluten free bread with organic Peanut butter and jam
  • Afternoon snack: Organic corn tortilla chips with organic avocado  (10 or so)  or Popcorn!
  • Dinner:  I always eat a good sized bowl of green salad with all kinds of organic veggies in it, including broccoli and cauliflower, carrots, cucumbers, mushrooms, peppers.. whatever I have around.  Then I have a piece of whatever meat I'm cooking for my hubby. I buy only Grass fed, hormone free beef and free range chicken and wild fish.  I also love Sweet potatoes and Yams, rice, and corn pasta. Sometimes I'll make spaghetti or homemade soup or meatloaf.. hamburgers, natural hotdogs, tacos.. pretty much the normal stuff, but I make it with mostly organic ingredients.
  • Dessert:  This is where I cheat. I usually grab a cookie, brownie or piece of chocolate. But only 1!

I drink lots of water during the day. I never drink soda or fruity drinks. In the winter I'll drink tea.
I also take a tablespoon of Acidophilus after dinner.

My favorite things to eat are chocolate and popcorn!! Or Cake. I love any kind of cake!!  I'm looking forward to the Wedding cake in Heaven at the great feast!

So there you have it!!  The truth of the matter is I really enjoy all these healthy foods, so it's not a huge problem for me to eat them. Don't get me wrong I do love a good burger and fries now and then. I just don't eat them very often!

Emma asks: I was also curious what Christian songs and hymns happen to be your favorite?  My favorite Christian bands are Third Day and Kutlass. But honestly, I don't listen to Christian Radio very much so I"m not up with the latest and greatest. I love the old Hymns like "Holy holy holy, Lord God Almighty. Early in the Morning, my song shall rise to thee!" Do you know that one?  And my all time favorite hymn is "Amazing Grace". I cannot sign that without crying!

So what about you?
What is the healthiest thing you eat on a regular basis
What is your favorite thing to eat?
What is your favorite Christian song? (either a popular tune or an old hymn)

  1. Fri Aug 10th,
    "Morning, MaryLu."
Eeehhh-gadzooks !!! Your healthy eating puts me to shame ! My hat is totally off to you ! Truthfully, I am most impressed MaryLu ... no wonder you are in such great shape (both inside and out) !!! My problem is -- I'm not a huge vegetable/or/fruit eater; and, I love desserts !!! And, although I drink lots of water throughout the day, I happen to love Diet Pepsi, one glass a day (I know ... so bad) !
What healthy thing I eat on a "regular basis" ... hmmmm, oh dear ... "on a regular basis" is throwing me right off ! (If I told you: "I'm NOT regular" ... you're ALL going to laugh !!!)
"One" of my favourite hymns: "It is Well, It is Well, With My Soul"; and, many popular tunes as well. (My granddaughter is watching TV (right behind me), and I can't think of the songs in my head at the same time with the TV distractions.) Oh boy ... is my age showing, or what !!! ???
Well, keep asking the questions MaryLu .... love it !!!
    Have a wonderful weekend everyone.
    Take care, and, God Bless,
    In Him, Brenda Hurley

  2. Oh WOW, MaryLu! Like Brenda, your eating habits put me to shame. But I do try to eat healthier than I used to. More fruits and veggies, if I can, and I try to drink more water. I do love unsweetened iced tea, too. And of course, my morning coffee.

Here I am dating myself, but my favorite decade of music is from the 80's, so bands such as Petra and DeGarmo and Key were listened to a great deal. (And here's a little info that might interest you. The lead singer of DeGarmo and Key, Dana Key, was supposed to be, I believe, the 6th generation grandson of Francis Scott Key. Thought you'd like to know.) My favorite hymn is also "It Is Well With My Soul" (another shout out to Brenda:).

Have a wonderful day, MaryLu! :)

  3. Hi MaryLu!

There is just no end to the similarities between us! I feel like we are related, and not just in Christ! ;)

My breakfast is usually a plate of raw vegetables (organic is preferred) and pumpkin seeds or eggs. Right now the pumpkin seeds have magically transformed into blueberries because my mom has gone blueberry picking a lot in the last few weeks and they are SO good fresh!

Lunch is really whatever. I get Turkey Bologna from the Organic Food Depot in the area and usually make a sandwich on yeast-free Sourdough bread with Dandelion leaves and Chickweed from my herb garden. Usually with more raw vegetables on the side. But lunch can be anything from an actually meal with meat and steamed vegetables and (possibly) rice, to a bean dip or Nannwich Indian sandwich I throw in the oven (all from the Organic Food Depot, of course).

LOVE salads! With as many extra veggies on top as can fit the bowl without overflowing. Lol Our home-made pizza's are much the same. Talk about DEEP-DISH! Tacos are a regular thing for us. Pretty much all the other normal stuff here, too!

The craziest/healthiest thing I make is what I call Killer Onion Soup. If I'm starting to feel like I'm getting sick, I eat this and it instantly "kills" whatever I feel coming on. I saute lots of onion and add fresh minced garlic (sometimes ginger, too) and horseradish, then heat with either Onion or Chicken Broth. X) It is so yummy and oh so good for you!

Tacos are my favorite thing to eat though. Pretty much every Thursday night I go to this place called Tijuana Flats with my best friend. They serve these huge tacos loaded with goodness and we play card games until they close.

I can't really say I have a single favorite song. God likes to speak to me through many songs, depending on the time or situation I'm in. What's cool is He will bring to my memory songs I haven't heard since I was much younger. God is so incredible. "My Life Is In You, Lord," is the one He's given me recently. :)

Thanks for sharing with us! God bless!

  4. Your typical meals sound delicious!
The healthiest thing I eat on a regular basis would probably be the berries I almost always eat with breakfast.
My favorite thing to eat is spaghetti with marinara and turkey meatballs, but I like a lot of different foods.
Some of my favorite hymns are Hark! the Voice of Jesus Calling, A Mighty Fortress is our God, On Eagles Wings, and Onward, Christian Soldiers.

  6. Yikes! How do you do that? I attempt to eat healthy food, but it's not always within my price range. I eat a lot of whole grains, I eat a lot of veggies (I really don't like fruit that much, except for berries), and I drink a lot of water and on weekends, coffee.
My two biggest hiccups are bread and ice cream. Love 'em to death (not literally...yet). And about once a month I go on a chocolate rampage. But my favorite thing to eat is I take some vegetarian refried beans, a whole wheat tortilla, a bit of chicken, cheese, and La Victoria hot sauce (No vinegar! Awesome!), and I just roll it up and heat it in a skillet. It's so filling, and not too bad for me.
I don't know that I really have a favorite Christian song right now. It keeps changing! I'm finding that Sanctus Real, Third Day, and Jeremy Camp are some artists that I'm listening to a lot lately. I'm also being caught by surprise by the occasional secular song with Christian undertones, such as "Open Up Your Eyes" by Daughtry and "Saved By the Grace of Your Love" by Lee Roy Parnell.

The healthiest thing I eat on a regular basis would probably be fruit. I love pretty much every kind of fruit and berries. My favorite thing to eat is lasagna. I LOVE Italian food! Hmm...I like a lot of Christian songs but one of my favorites is "On Eagles Wings". That was sung at my confirmation! I also like Britt Nicole,a Christian singer.

  8. Brenda, you crack me up!! I think most people are like you. You're the normal one and I'm the weird one. ;-)

Angi, That's really interesting about Dana Key!! What an incredible man to be related to. And I love "It is well with my soul" too!

Lauri, maybe we are related!! Our ancestors might have come over on a ship together. :-) From what you're describing, it looks like you eat much healthier than I do. But what's really cool is that I ALSO make a Garlic/onion soup when I'm sick. Garlic is a great anit-bacterial.. and it kills off those germs right away!

Cortney, berries are super good for you.. and I love them too.. especially fresh. Ah yes.. "A Mighty Fortress is our God" !! Love that one too!

Sasafras, sounds like you are doing pretty good on eating healthy! I love bread too, but was told to cut back on Gluten by my doctor. Uggg. Your tortilla meal sounds delish. And I like Jeremy Camp too. :-)

Hi Heather! I'm surprised that so many people don't like fruit these days. It's so good for you. Pasta is my fav too.. but I found some Corn pasta at Trader Joes that is really good (contains no wheat) Yes.. I know that song "On Eagles Wings" At least I think I do.. Beautiful, inspiring song.

  9. I eat healthy, but not *that* healthy, lol! :-D Usually whole grain cereal and fruit for breakfast, leftovers from last night's dinner for lunch, and my mom always cooks healthy dinners - lean meat and tons of vegetables. We buy organic when we can afford it, but we always buy organic milk, beef, apples, and grapes, since those are said to be the worst for growth hormones and pesticides. I'm a fruit addict, so that's usually my dessert.

As for Christian music, I love Kutless, too, as well as heavier stuff like Red. But I also like the occasional hymn, and my all-time favorite is "Be Thou My Vision."

  10. Hey, MaryLu, thanks for sharing your menu with us. As you know, Jack and I have to watch what we eat most of the time. It's not what we are eating that makes us healthier, it's what we aren't eating. When we cut bread and starches out of our diet, we both lost weight quickly and we don't feel bloated after meals. My favorite thing to eat is chocolate, of course, but the candy 'bottle caps' are a close second. Nothing but sugar, but I love them. As for my favorite Christian song, I'd have to say 'Come Thou Fount' would be at the top of the list along with 'Amazing Grace' and 'Redemption'.

  11. LOL, I realized how I could have not asked two more different questions! Thanks so much for answering them, MaryLu! I really want to get healthy, and I know you mentioned before you are a health nut, so I figured you were a great person to ask. I am such a carb/sweet lover! I love pasta, and almost any dessert! However, I am really going to try to get things in order, and eat right. Today I did well. I had a smoothie for breakfast, a turkey burger with avocado, two mangos, and some carrots sticks for lunch. I still haven’t had dinner, so that is up in the air. But that is so much better than my normal. I must take it one day at a time, right?

I love hymns (I think I mentioned that before). I don’t listen to much contemporary Christian music. My favorite hymns are Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent, What Wondrous Love is This, Come O Thou Traveler Unknown, Jesus Lover of my Soul, Be Thou my Vision, O The Deep Deep Love of Jesus, Come Ye Sinners, Let us Love and Sing and Wonder, and like you, I also love Amazing Grace.

Thanks again, MaryLu! Have a wonderful and restful weekend!

  12. Another Kutlass fan, Sapphire, cool! And it sounds like you eat pretty healthy to me!

Chaplain.. I know breads and starches are bad.. I'm sure I could drop these last 2 pounds if I cut out bread! But I can't seem to bring myself to do it!! LOL But I'm so proud of you and Swabbie Jack! Yes.. The Redemption song.. you all are reminding me of songs I love!

Emma, if I had my way I'd eat sweets and carbs all day long! In fact, I'm planning on it in Heaven! LOL. So I completely understand. But I don't want to ever get sick or have some disease or look like a toad. :-) Now, that may happen anyway, but not by my own hand.. So, I try real hard to be good. Of course I allow myself some goodies now and then. Your meals today sounded perfect!
Aren't the old Hymns great? I love them too!

    Have a great weekend, Ladies!

    Emma
