James Callaway

Brief Description:  At 28, muscular, with wheat-colored hair and hard bronze eyes, James presents   he knows his appeal is only external for he has already made a huge mess of his life. He failed at pastoring his father’s church—TWICE—and then failed as a doctor on the front lines of the Civil War when he was overcome with an acute fear of blood. Though he wants more than anything to make a difference in the world and help others, everything he touches turns to ash. He blames his failures on a weakness he has for beautiful women, and in particular immoral, beautiful women. Twice, women lured him away from his duties as pastor and his devotion to God, the last time they cost James his father’s life. Blaming them for his failings, James vowed to rid his city of all immoral women, and when that didn’t work he joined the expedition to Brazil in the hopes of creating a Southern Utopia free from immorality.  Only there will he be able to become the preacher his father hoped and make a difference in the spiritual lives of the colonists. Even so, guilt weighs heavy on James as he goes about his duties, for he never seems to live up to his own expectations. Perhaps if he could find a Godly, chaste women to marry, that would set him straight. Fortunately, there is such a lady among the colonists, Angeline Moore.
quite a commanding figure. Unfortunately,

Strengths: Smart, Patient, Cares for others, Devoted, Hard-working, Courageous, Self-sacrificing
Weaknesses: Insecure, feels like failure, unable to control passions, fear of blood, vulnerable, sensitive
Quirks:  James’s most precious possession is his father’s Bible. James wears his heart on his sleeve. He has a scar on the right side of his mouth from a sword fight with a husband of a lady he “spent time with”.

Inspiration: James is a male messiah. He wants so badly to make his life count for something, to make a difference and help others! I love his character. His heart is in the right place, but it’s the execution of his dreams that needs some help. He tries his hand at both pastoring and doctoring but fails to call upon God for help and strength when things get tough, and therefore he ends up failing at both. Not only failing, but inadvertently causing his father’s death. Now, weighted down with more guilt than a man can bear, he looks for someone to blame, and instead of blaming himself, he blames the loose women who led him astray. Yet, how many of us do the same thing?  We want so badly to serve God, yet when the enemy comes against us, we don’t ask for God’s help. We try to do it on our own power. Then when we fail we blame anyone but ourselves! James has a hard road to travel before he realizes his error.

So, what do you think of James?  Do you know anyone like him? A person who really wants to do the right thing but keeps relying on his own strength and failing?  Haven't we all done that at one point or another?

Leave your answer with your email and I'll draw a winner next Friday!

Have a great weekend!

  1. Fri June 13th,
    "Morning, MaryLu."
Love the actor playing "James" .... (watch Hawaii Five-0 every chance I can).
I can identify with James ... and yes, if we were 'all' painfully honest, I think each of us can identify with -- a person who really wants to do the right thing but keeps relying on his own strength and failing .... absolutely !
That seems to be our human nature ... "thinking" we can do it on our own !
Can't wait to read his story along with the other characters in "Abandoned Memories" !!! Sounds like a great book. And, I truly love and appreciate it when I can 'identify' with the characters -- in strengths and/or weaknesses. Always makes the story more believable.
    Thanks for sharing.
Take care, and, God Bless, In Him, Brenda

  2. Hey MaryLu,
Interesting angle that as a pastor James fails to call on God when the going gets tough. Just goes to show we all have human failings regardless of our station in life, even a "Godly" man.
Having said that, one of my pet peeves is when one person blames another for the choices they make, "if he hadn't made me do this" or "she made me do that" type thinking. We all choose our own reactions to lifes' problems and how we deal with our own weaknesses. The sooner we realize the "log in our own eye" the sooner we are able to get it right with God. James blindly blames Angeline for his fallen nature and choices, refusing to take responsiblity for it himself and accept Gods forgiveness and His Strength in our weakness. He is appealing in so many ways, but has a lot of work to do "in my book" :) to be a convincing hero considering the facts, he plays the bame game, thinks a moral woman can set him straight (oh, boy) and thinks he can ever find a moral Utopia (double oh, boy). Can't wait to see how it plays out in Abandoned Memories!
Hope you are enjoying that little grandgirl, grandbabies are so precious!

  3. I think you're right, we are all prone to trying to do things our way or in our own strength! I can just imagine how Angeline's background will confront James's weaknesses and sins and I can't wait to find out what happens!

  4. Unfortunately, I can relate all too well with James. I, too, tried for years to do 'good' on my own. It took a wake call from God to show me that 'when I am weak (in my own strength), then am I strong (in Him).' Beyond excited to read James and Angeline's story.

  5. I am living with someone like James. It's my 16 year old son. He is such a good, young man, but many times is his own worst enemy. I pray for him every day and trust God to be with him and give him what he needs to endure. Thanks for a chance to win another one of your books! I love being a Nana to 5 and I'm sure that you are enjoying being a grandparent as well.

    Blessings,

    Tina

  6. I can't wait to read Angeline's story and learn more about James. He has been one of my favorite characters from the start, I think because I can relate to him. We either do as he does, or know someone who is like him. I can't wait to see how their story plays out, James will have to relinquish his control to get through this one I am sure. I wonder what he chooses and how it all ends. I am looking forward to this book!

  7. You're right, I think we've all been like James at some point in our lives, if we're being honest, relying on our own resources rather than God. You've got me intrigued, MaryLu, and I can't wait to read your new novel! Thanks for the giveaway and for the sneak peek into your characters! danandlyndaedwards (at) msn (dot) com.

  8. Hi, MaryLu!!

James is me, years ago, before I relinquished control of my life to God!! I think he is also some of the people I know who struggle with addictions - wanting to conquer their vices, make their life count, love and be a help to others. Yet - not realizing, or willing to acknowledge the answer for their problems is God!!

SO looking forward to "Abandoned Memories"!!

    Love and hugs, MaryLu!!

  9. Like many of the people commenting on this post, I also have to admit that I see a lot of myself in James. I've always struggled with the tendency to rely on my own strength, which usually leads to me flat on the ground unable to move before I finally admit that I need God's strength instead of my own.

Looking forward to reading this book! :)

  11. Thanks Everyone! I'm enjoying your comments. These two characters were difficult to write in many ways. I guess I could relate more to Angeline and her past (not all of it!) but James' tendency to rely on his own strength is a struggle of my own. His weird idea that he could avoid sin by avoiding sinful people is one I cannot relate to. Where can we go to find non sinful people? Only heaven, I'm afraid. :-)

  12. Thank you MaryLu! I'm excited to read the book!

I really like James and I'm excited to see how things work out as he learns to let go of doing things his own way, and let God take his life and do great things in him and through him. Yay!

    Have a great weekend!

  15. Yes, MaryLu, I have known people who always have excuses for the sins they commit, when they need to ask GOD's forgiveness and ask HIM for His guidance. I believe most people have done that at some point in their lives. I know I have in the past. I would sure love to win your book. Maxie > mac262(at)me(dot)com <

  17. I think sometimes we as Christians fail may times in leading a life pleasing to God, and we end up like James. We feel guilty and want to push our guilt onto something else to excuse our sins. Forunately, we have a God who is full of mercy and grace and will change us to become more like Jesus! spanisheyes8761 (at) aol.com

  18. I think James is an intriguing character. He tries so hard to do the right thing but often falls short. Kind of like me.
I'm really looking forward to this third book; I loved the first two.
