I recently discovered that God's Book of Remembrance is a very important book to be listed in during the end times. If you stick with me to the end, you'll see why.
A study of Scripture reveals that God keeps many books in heaven that contain information about His Creation here on earth. (Namely us!) We read about the Book of the Living, Book of our Tears, Book of Life, Book containing our works, as well as many other books. I find it so interesting to think that God is keeping records. It's both comforting and alarming.
And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. Revelation 20:12
We find the Book of Remembrance in Malachi. It is only mentioned in this book and no where else in the Bible, but it is a VERY important book. And one you will want to be included in.
Let me give a brief overview of what the book of Malachi is about before we get into the Book of Remembrance. The Israelites are back in the land of Israel after a 70 year captivity in Babylon. God had punished them for repeatedly turning away from Him and worshiping idols and committing horrendous acts of wickedness. He had given them chance after chance after chance, but finally allowed Nebuchadnezzar to conquer them and drag everyone to Babylon. Now, it's been 100 years since their return and the people have once again turned against God. The first couple of chapters are God rebuking them for their unfaithfulness and their evil actions.
Then we get to Chapter 3 and God begins to prophecy about Jesus's coming. He talks about both His first coming and His second coming.
“Behold, I send My messenger,
And he will prepare the way before Me.
And the Lord, whom you seek,
Will suddenly come to His temple,
Even the Messenger of the covenant,
In whom you delight.
Behold, He is coming,”
Says the Lord of hosts.
“But who can endure the day of His coming?
And who can stand when He appears?
For He is like a refiner’s fire
And like launderers’ soap.
Malachi 3:1-2
God goes on to declare that He will judge them in that day, and He begs them to return to Him. He goes on to say how they have robbed Him of their tithes and how they have said that it is useless to serve Him. Now, we get to the very special Book of Remembrance
Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another,
And the Lord listened and heard them;
So a book of remembrance was written before Him
For those who fear the Lord
And who meditate on His name.
“They shall be Mine,” says the Lord of hosts,
“On the day that I make them My jewels.
And I will spare them
As a man spares his own son who serves him.” Malachi 3:16-17
So, what do you have to do to be included in the Book of Remembrance?
Fear the Lord
Meditate on His Name
Note: Fear the Lord does not mean you're afraid of God. It means you revere Him, you obey Him, you follow Him with all your heart.
What is the REWARD for being in The Book of Remembrance? See verse 17. "I will spare them as a man spares his own son who serves him."
Spare them from what? At first glance, you might think from hell, but we should always read Scripture in context to discover its true meaning. Besides, we know that salvation from hell is only achieved by trusting in Jesus and following Him. To find out what God is sparing these particular people from, we have to keep reading in Malachi. Just a few verses later we see that the entire last chapter of Malachi is all about the "Day of the Lord", which every Biblical scholar in the world agrees is the Tribulation period.
“For behold, the day is coming,
Burning like an oven,
And all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble.
And the day which is coming shall burn them up,”
Says the Lord of hosts,
“That will leave them neither root nor branch.
But to you who fear My name
The Sun of Righteousness shall arise
With healing in His wings;
And you shall go out
And grow fat like stall-fed calves. Malachi 4:1-2
The Day of the Lord is confirmed just a few verses later
Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophetBefore the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. Malachi 4:5
Based on these Scriptures, it seems to me that in order to be spared the Tribulation period here on earth, we have to be listed in God's Book of Remembrance. Which logically then leads to the conclusion that some "believers" who do not meet the conditions will not be spared, but will have to endure all the trails coming upon the earth. (But still be saved from hell) We aren't talking about "works" here, but the fear of the Lord. Many other Scriptures allude to this same conclusion as this one from Jesus Himself in His discourse on the Tribulation.
Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man (Jesus, Luke 21:36)
Time is short. It's time we all get serious about God. I'm speaking to myself as well as to all of you. I, for one, want to be included in God's Book of Remembrance!
.
Thank you for these words of explanation on the 'fear of the Lord'. I've always wondered, even when reading scripture, why we should fear our loving Lord. I've always preferred the word 'revere', because He is our creator and so much more.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever heard Malachi as being the Book of Remembrance. I will have to go back and read the book again. Thank you.
Evelyn, thank you for coming by. Yes, for me, I think of the fear of the Lord as reverence.. and if we revere Him, we will obey Him and worship Him. :-)
DeleteThank you. What a powerful message for all of us! :-)
