I have always loved this verse. It helps me to remember my perspective. But, with risk of sounding ignorant, I have a question. How do you store up treasure in heaven?
Matthew 6:3-4 says But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly... I think that secret good deeds that only God knows of is how you store treasure in heaven...or it could also mean the people you plant a seed in. Don't know how helpful this is, but it's what I believe.
Yes, that's what I believe Scripture confirms, swilkins. The treasure we store in heaven are all the things we did and said here on earth that were done purely for the glory of God, in obedience to Him, and out of love for Him and others. Everything else gets burned up as wood, hay, or stubble.
1 Corinthians 3 says If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.
Yes, treasures on earth are material things that you cannot take with you, just as money is a necessity here on earth and many of us worry about the lack sometimes, it does not make you a better person or buy your way to heaven. I think many forget that simple fact. And some forget what is said in Matthew 6, thinking they must tell everyone of their good deeds, when in fact that is not the case at all. If you spend your life doing for others and no one knows but you, your deeds are recorded in the most important book of all and that is all that matters. I believe it is what is in our hearts and the way we live our lives that bring us closer to Christ and make us who we are. And yes, I believe we are much richer when we find fellow believers, those we know face to face and those we know in recent years via this Social Media. Yes, I believe our acquaintances can make us richer or poorer in Christ and those who help us in our walk with Christ are true treasures.
