My Experience with Demons and Spiritual warfare!

Some of you who have followed me for awhile will remember this story. However, I felt led from the Lord to tell it again and add some additional information on Spiritual Warfare that I've leaned from experience and the Scriptures.

Unfortunately most churches today do not teach their members about demons, satan, nephilim and how to do battle in the spirit realm. Because of this, they are leaving their flock of sheep exposed to wolves.   This is one of the reasons I wrote my Protectors of the Spear series. I wanted to show examples of how to battle these unseen enemies.

As we approach the end of the age, Satan is growing ever more anxious to put his plan of World domination into practice. He wants nothing more than to be all powerful and to be worshiped as god. And yes, he will have his time, his moment of glory for 7 years, before Jesus will cast him into the pit and bind him for 1000 years. Do you think he doesn't know how close he is to that time? Of course he does!  He already has the lost in his pocket, so who do you think he's going to hassle in these last days?  Yup. believers in Jesus! His purpose? To get us to become lukewarm toward Jesus, weaken our faith, and ultimately to get us to forsake our Lord. How does he do it?

  • Temptation
  • Sickness
  • Strife
  • Stress
  • Fear
  • Lies and deception

Just to name a few of his tricks. However, before my story, it's important to remember 2 things.

Satan cannot do anything to you without YOUR permissions or God's permission.

God's Permission:  Remember Job in the Bible? He was as upright and righteous as any human could get, and Satan hated him!  Yet before he could afflict Job, he had to get God's permission. Even then, God put limitations on what he could do.  (See Job 1)

Therefore if you feel afflicted, God may be allowing it to test your faith, to see whether you truly believe what you profess to believe, to find out when the rubber hits the road, where your true allegiances lie. He may also be allowing it as a witness to those around you, to bring people to Him! He always promises to NOT give us more than we can handle.

Your Permission: Yes, you can give satan and his demons full permission to enter your life and make you miserable, and because God gave you free will, there's nothing God will do to stop it.  How do we give permission to the enemy?

  • Willful repeated Sin
  • Prolonged Anger, hatred, strife, bitterness, arguing
  • Serious doubt, idolatry (putting anything before God)
  • Stepping outside the protective shield of God's holiness

You see, demons are constantly watching you. In fact, satan has assigned one or more to you and your family for most of your life. What are they looking for? An opening! A chance to slip through a hole in your shield so they can then enter your life and cause problems.  If God isn't testing you and you're walking in holiness with Him, then the demons can't touch you. By holiness, I mean you have a relationship with Jesus. You stay in the Bible, you pray, and your do your best to avoid sin and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. We are all in different places in our walk, so this will look different from person to person. Yes, we all sin and make mistakes, but it's a matter of the heart. That's what God looks at. Do we have a heart that loves Him and desires to follow Him in every way!

Once you step outside of the protective shield of God, you make yourself vulnerable to demons. Hence, my story below. This is a true story without any embellishments

Almost 10 years ago, my husband and I went to Jamaica to celebrate our 20th Anniversary. We went to a Sandals resort, but I must tell you that the minute we left the plane on that island, I felt a heaviness in my spirit.  We stayed mostly at the resort, but we also took some tours, and I soon discovered there was a lot of witchcraft on the island, voodoo, etc. We were having a good time for the most part, but I made sure that each morning with my coffee I read my Bible and spent time in prayer. It was often difficult with so many people around and nowhere to go to be alone. My husband was a new Christian and wasn't doing that.

On the last day of our trip, I wandered down a long pier that hung out over the beautiful turquoise water and I sat there to pray. One of the hotel workers came up to talk me. He was a young black man around 20 or so. I had no idea what he wanted but I took the opportunity to witness to him. Mind you, I'm NOT an evangelist at all. I usually get tongue tied when I'm trying to tell others about Jesus. But he was talking about going to college and what his future looked like and I saw an opening, so I told him about Jesus. Finally he left and I wandered back to my hotel room to meet my husband for lunch.

My husband was furious. He accused me of flirting with this young boy. Without going into details, he was very cruel to me in the things he said. However, I'm sad to report my reaction was not a good one. I got angry and we ended up in a huge fight, yelling and screaming, etc. I'm not proud of it, but I slipped up. This went on for hours and we finally made up a little, at least enough to grab some dinner. That night we both went to bed.

In the middle of the night, I was awakened by flashes of light. I remember being so sleepy that I thought I was dreaming. They kept flashing, so I opened my eyes and sat up in bed. There was an entire string of lights that stretched from the front door all the way to the bathroom along the wall. Each one of them was flashing on and off, but not at the same time. I thought how weird. So I got up and went to turn off the switch. It was already off. The lights stopped. I went back to bed. They started up again, only this time, my husband started groaning in his sleep. I mean loud, scary groaning. Okay, so now I figured out what this was.

Immediately, I sat up in bed and I said. "Get out in the name of Jesus!"
BAM! The lights stopped and my husband stopped groaning. I heard him say "Thank you" before we both drifted back to sleep. In the morning, he told me he was having a vivid nightmare where he was pinned against a wall and crows were pecking out his eyes!

Before that time, I hadn't realized that demons had power to turn lights off and on, but since then I've done some research and come to believe that the powerful ones can move objects. I learned two things that night.

  • Demons are very real and powerful
  • Demons had been watching my husband and I since we got there, looking for an opportunity
  • Satan was furious with me for witnessing to that boy
  • Demons whispered in my husband's ear that I was flirting (which was one of his biggest fears)
  • My husband and I opened the door to allow these demons in by our anger and fighting and strife.

But

ONE command from little old me IN THE NAME OF JESUS scattered them from the room and our lives. Just one command with the most powerful name in the universe attached and they became powerless and whimpered away like babies.

Since then I have no trouble believing in demons, and more importantly, no trouble believing in the power of Jesus and His name. There's nothing to fear from satan and is minions if you belong to Jesus. Nothing! Jesus has already won the battle.

I hope the story encourages you and helps you to

1. Never give the enemy an opportunity
2. Remember you belong to the King of Kings and nothing can harm you.

There's lots more to doing spiritual battle, like using the Word of God as a sword, and fasting and praying, but I'll leave it at this for now. Blessings!

Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”

Luke 10:19-20

  1. MaryLu, thanks for sharing this! Churches are not being taught about demonic warfare & the power that's in the name of Jesus for the most part. I was praying at the altar for various needs in an empty church yrs ago of which I was a member. I felt something behind me near the door bc I got the goosebumps & the hair raised up on the back of my neck. I turned around & there was an ugly, black wolf/dog creature slinking towards me. It's fur was matted & sticking out in every different direction. I assume bc I had been in prayer I knew this wasn't a "real" animal, but was demonic. I was trembling, but I rebuked it in the name of Jesus and commanded it to leave. It whimpered, was scared, and went right through the wall & I continued praying. I testified to the church about my experience & how much power we have in the name of Jesus, hoping they wouldn't think I'd gone crackers or something. lol It was a Holy Ghost filled church, so I doubt they did. I've not had anymore visible demonic encounters of which I'm glad! Unseen demonic attacks, yes. But hubby & I have had visible angelic ones which we'll save for another time!

    1. Wow, Diana! You know that story reminds me of my Protectors of the Spear series and the demonic wolves that went after them! I only made that up, but here you are telling me that it really did happen to you! Did your pastor every mention it in a sermon? Anyway, I'd love to hear your angel stories some time!

    2. Yes, I thought about that when I was reading the series! Which tells me you were writing under the anointing bc what you described is what I saw! It's been almost 25 yrs since I've heard that pastor preach (we moved) and I really can't remember, but I can't imagine him not mentioning it! But it's odd how I can remember the demonic incident like it was yesterday. I guess those spiritual moments such as the one you shared above, always remain clearly in our memory bc they leave such a profound effect on us.
