Surrender the Night month!

First, the winner of last Friday's drawing for a free mug or tote bag from Laurie Alice Eakes is:  Casey!!! Congratulations, Casey! And thanks to all who entered!
And NOW

Welcome to Surrender the Night month!

In honor of the book's release next month, I'll be posting something about the story every Friday. Leave a comment and I'll enter your name in a drawing for a free copy!  If you're a member of me Motley Crew, feel free to leave a comment, but ye won't be entered in the drawin'. Be that clear?

Anyway, today we will learn a little bit about the heroine, Miss Rose McGuire.

Rose McGuire

Brief description:  At age 20, tall and slender with turquoise-colored eyes and honeyed hair, Rose McGuire would be considered one of Baltimore’s most comely ladies if it weren’t for the smudges of dirt often found on her hands and face. You see, Rose would prefer working on her farm than donning fancy gowns and attending soirees and teas with the high society of Baltimore. In fact, some of her best friends are pigs, chickens, and cows, and she finds them far more trustworthy than any man she has met. Though she must marry to retain ownership of her farm, a horrific event in her past, keeps her mistrustful of all men and in bondage to fear and unforgiveness. So much so that she rarely leaves the sanctuary of her farm where she lives with her doting Aunt and Uncle. She particularly hates the British because they murdered her father.  So, what is Rose to do when British troops attack her farm, and one particular British naval officer is wounded trying to protect her?

Strengths: Patriotic, Good heart, Charitable, Humble, Down-to-earth
Weaknesses:  Fear, Unforgiving, Bitter, Pessimist

Quirks: When Rose is frightened, she sings a song her father used to sing to her as a child. She often has specks of dirt on her skin and gown.

Inspiration: We are not only a product of our genetics but of our past. When more than one terrible tragedy strikes us, particularly when we are young, it is often impossible to overcome the various struggles which result. I’ve met countless people who are what I call, the walking wounded. They appear to function well on the outside, but inside they are a bubbling mass of anger, hatred, bitterness, insecurity, and unforgiveness—a cauldron just waiting to explode at the slightest little thing. Unless they let go of their unforgiveness and anger and receive the healing love of God, they will lead very unsuccessful lives. These people are the inspiration for Rose. She wants to be better, she wants to overcome her fear, her past, she wants to help other people, but she is imprisoned in her own fear and hatred.

Based on this description, what qualities do you have that are similar to Rose, and in what ways are you different?

  1. Fri Feb 4th,
    Morning, MaryLu.
First of all ... "Congratulations to Casey" !!!
Well, let me see now ... Rose is 20, tall and slender, with turquoise-coloured eyes and honeyed hair .... where I am 60, medium height, overweight, blue-eyes, and gray hair dyed light brown. So far, we have nothing in common. However, I do appreciate her mistrust of men in general. I believe I share her strengths; and as for the weaknesses -- yes I am fearful of things, often feel insecure, and can tend to be pessimistic.
The book sounds excellent, MaryLu ... promising not only to be a great story, but one I am sure we (I) will identify with !!!
Can hardly wait until it is available.
    Thanks for sharing !
    Take care, and, God Bless,

  2. Morning MaryLu! This was a topic we discussed in my psychology class: is our personality formed by nature, or nurture? I said nurture, because so much can affect us and change our lives drastically. I think I'm going to like Rose a lot because I share a lot in common with her. Most (I'm sorry to say) are with her weaknesses. BUT! I think I'm getting better as I try to read God's word everyday. It's a process all right-but its a good one and you feel as if God's taking a sponge and cleaning you up-making you sparkle and shine! I can't wait to see how Rose overcomes all of her problems.
Thank you for this post MaryLu! I can't wait to read Surrender the Night.

Hmm, I don't think I'm pessimistic, but I do tend to that once in a while. I do like to think I am good-hearted. :)

Can't wait for next week and to celebrate with the winner. :D

  6. While I don't fit her physical description, what I do have in common with Rose is that currently I'm a stay at home farmgirl and I love hanging out with all the animals on my farm. I haven't really suffered from any major tragedies but I've had do deal with a lot of her weaknesses.

  10. I will admit I can be a bit of a cynic/mistrustful with romance/love/men, like Rose. But I believe that I have a good heart, that is giving and a down to earth personality. I love the nurse and patient/love your enemy dynamic that you have for this story. Can't wait to read it!

  12. For myself, sometimes fear gets to me, but like Rose I want to overcome my fears and definitely try not to let my fears overcome me!

  13. I am really looking forward to reading this book. :)
I would say that I am similar to Rose in my good heart and down-to-earth outlook. Dirt from the garden is not the only thing that you will find on my fingers & clothes, but also baby food & spit up. Along with my older kids' messes & projects. :)
Thanks be to God that I no longer harbor bitterness and fear in regards to men, like Rose, because He has healed those wounds.
    Have a lovely day,
    Bree Cabrera

  14. Her love for her farm. Her fear and unforgiveness, only mine is toward pretty teenage girls not men. :/ That is something I struggle with. The way she'd rather be on the farm then at parties. The way she always has smudges of dirt on her hands, face, or gown. Thankyou so much! I can't wait to read this!!!

  15. Well, Ladies, I don't think any of us fit in with Rose's physical description!! LOL Well, maybe when I was 20. But yes, I think many of us, including myself, can identify with her fears and mistrust and pessimism. And like some of you.. (love you down to earth girls!) we go through life with dirt in our fingernails and maybe a bit of baby spit up, and we love to play with animals. Isn't that how most women are? Well, at least the ones in my life. Obviously I don't hang out with the upper crust!
    Thanks for your comments!

  17. I can't wait to read this book when it comes out! I can identify with Rose because I live in the Baltimore area also and see myself as down to earth and good-hearted.
Seems we all struggle with fears at times...but God is good and He's always there beside me giving me peace and comfort.

  18. This book sounds awesome! Let's see...the good qualities I share would probably be her good heart and especially her down-to-earthness (I'd much rather be working hard than attending fancy parties, too). And I certainly do NOT share her humility, but I try hard every day! :-) As for bad qualities, I definitely share her fear and bitterness toward men...it seems I'm not alone with that one.
Can't wait to read this book! :-)

  19. This novel sounds great, MaryLu, I can't wait to read it. I can relate to Rose in a lot of ways. Some too personal to mention. I can't wait to see how God influences her life. I may be 48 on the outside, but on the inside, most days, I am still 20. Good luck to everyone in the contest.

  20. I can always relate to your characters somehow, MaryLu. Like Rose, I have a good heart and I'm very humble. But I am not gorgeous like Rose, with her turquoise eyes and honeyed hair. Also, I don't live on a farm, but I do love the country.
She will be a fun character! Hopefully I might just learn a thing or two from her. :)
Cant wait for Surrender the Night to release!!

  22. As far as insecurity goes, I can be pretty insecure when it comes to my outward appearance. Sometimes I'll wonder how any guy could be interested in me. This all stems from a past, but at least now I have a relationship with my Heavenly Father, whom I know is shaping me from the inside out. :) As far as differences from Rose, I have what happened in my past, but I have learned to let go, forgive, and find my hope in God.

  23. Hey, I'm really looking forward to reading more about this character and getting to know her in the story. I really like the tom boy twist to her. LOL! Looking forward to reading this book!

  26. Rose ans I look similar: my hair is honey-colored and my eyes are a bright light blue, but in my mind's eye she looks better than me :)

I have not had a whole lot of experience with men in my life. Bad experience, anyways, and for that I'm grateful. About the worst I've ever experienced is a few knuckleheads. So not really alike there.

But where we are alike personality-wise is our mistrust of people in general. While I'm really good at appearing happy and open and fun, it's only ever partly true. I've gotten good at keeping my true thoughts and feelings close inside of me. My brother is my closest friend, and even now whenever I trust him enough to share something with him he's usually surprised.

That's about all I share in common with Rose. Oh wait, I do enjoy working on the ranch with my horse. Not a farm with cows, sheep, pigs, etc., but close enough.

  27. Well Me and Rose are not alike in appearance.
I have brown hair and eyes, I do love to be outside, and I really enjoy hard work.
    I think I'm down-to-earth, but I'm not really humble,(I know, I have to work on it!:S)

Oh man am I looking forward to reading this!
Rose sounds like a really great person and I cant wait to get to know her better!

    Congratulations on winning Casey!

  28. I don't look anything like Rose, and while I haven't had a bad experience with men, I am still afraid of dating!! I also can really be a pessimist, and like her I'd rather just stay at home!

  29. I love your books, and I can't wait for this one. Like Rose, I am tall and slender, and I'm about her age. Like her I am pessimistic and fearful. I also do not like to leave the sanctuary of home and family. I look forward to learning more bout her!

  30. I can relate to Rose. I used to hate my parents and wish I was an orphan (I could never wish they were dead, though, although I imagined how much better my life would be without them - it wouldn't have been, and I was scared all the time they would die and leave me all alone). I was a walking contradiction. I tend to hold grudges and isolate people (and myself) as a result.

I have to say I am scared of men, although I am straight and dream of having a husband. I just think that sometimes it won't come to pass because I won't let any guy get close to me.

I withdraw from physical touch by guys, even a shoulder rub or a bump. I literally withdraw and tense up; it's obvious, although I have not been molested or raped or abused in any way that I know of. And not because I'm pursuing purity, but because I am afraid they will steal my purity and I will have troubles like my friends and get my heart broken, even though I am only 20. I don't want a broken heart - even if that means I won't love - and I don't want a lot of boyfriends.

But God is helping me come to terms with it, and change my heart. He has already transformed parts of my heart to please Him.

So I can relate to Rose being scared and bitter.

  31. Congrats to the winner.I try to not to hold grudges,do have forgiveness but may not forget.I forgive for me as much as for them.
I am not a bitter person.I think not bitterness will eat at your soul.I so enjoy your books.

  32. Nina, yes I take Canadian entries! Some of my best friends are Canadians.
Thank you, Kelly, Baltimore is a very cool city. I loved visiting there. Thank you Sarah, Tori, Debbie, Sapphire.. sounds like we all share some qualities with Rose.
Nicole, I felt very much like you when I was younger, but God has a great plan for you!
Thanks Amber, Kayla, Waving at Connie!
Sasafras, how nice that you and your brother are so close!
Thank you Leah and Rebecca! Anonymous, you forgot to leave your email!
Rachel, I imagine your fear of men comes from this horrible culture and the things you see on TV. There are really good, Godly men out there who will cherish you. Let God lead you to the right one.
Thanks April.. yes bitterness is a nasty cancer.
    Have a nice weekend, ladies!

  33. Well you described me to a t! I look just like Rose...hehehe KIDDING!We both have a love for animals but that's about it, I'm a liiittle bit older and I'm a brunette. :-P I do love to play in the dirt though! Just look at my Facebook pics, there's one where I'm pretty much plastered in mud. I'm a bit of a tomboy and I love to ride ATV's and get as dirty as possible! :-)

  34. Congrats to Casey!

And MaryLu, I'm part of your crew but I wanted to comment anyway.
This book looks really good, and my brother, though not a female =P has some of the qualities you mentioned, a painful event in the past has caused him to be bitter and hateful, and he gave up on God, even adding swears and accusing God's plan of being wrong.
