Win a copy of Patty Smith Hall's The Doctor's Bride!!!

First things first: The winner of last week's drawing (done by Random.org) for Laurie Alice Eakes' book, A Reluctant Courtship is R. Merr!!! Congratulations!   Thank you all for your comments and for entering. I highly recommend this book so if you didn't win, I encourage you to buy it HERE

Today, I have another special author guest.  Please Welcome Patty Smith Hall!!

Patty Smith Hall has made up stories since being forced on boring drives into the Georgia countryside when she was too young to stay home by herself. Now she's happy to share her wild imagination and love of history with others, including her husband, Danny, two smart and gorgeous daughters, and a Yorkie she spoils like a baby. She resides in North Georgia.

Isn't she pretty?  I met Patty years ago when I was on a book signing tour in Michigan. She was so helpful to me and three other authors who were touring places quite unknown to us. She helped spread the word to local libraries and churches, and I believe she even got thrown out of one church!  Well, she'll have to tell you that story. It's pretty funny.

Not only is Patty kind and pretty, but she's also a great author.   She has a new release out that I know you're going to LOVE

  The Doctor’s Bride

Dr. Joshua McClain is headed west
First stop: Hillsdale, Michigan, to break the marriage contract his late mother arranged between him and Katie Clark. Years ago, Katie left him behind in Charleston. But after a train crash, he comes face-to-face with Dr. Kathleen Clark, his childhood friend all grown up.
When Josh shows up in town, claiming they're betrothed, Katie refuses to consider an arranged marriage. She'll marry for love or not at all. Besides, he's headed for Kansas Territory; her practice is here in Hillsdale. So why are they both finding it hard to break their betrothal and say goodbye?

Patty, please tell us how the story of The Doctor's Bride came about?

What do you do when it’s winter in Michigan; you’re stuck inside for the fifteenth day in a row because the clouds have (once again) opened up and dropped another foot of the white stuff on your driveway, and it’s so cold, your sinuses freeze into two large ice cubes in the center of your face?
If you’re me, you write about a train wreck in Hillsdale Michigan during a blizzard in February, 1856!
Being a southern girl, the daily onslaught of spitting snow kept me close to home during my seven years living just outside of Grand Rapids, Michigan, fueling an interest in the surrounding communities that for the most part, lay beneath a blanket of white. So when I came across an old newspaper article about the head-on collision on the Southern Michigan Rail Line just outside of Hillsdale, I found myself intrigued. Two trains--one heading east, the other, carrying passengers west--collided in the mist of a raging blizzard just after midnight on February 8th, 1856. Both trains were behind schedule so the engineers were ‘running wild’ in an effort to make up lost time, one engineer going so far as to operate his engine without a head light to warn any oncoming trains. Three men died in the initial crash while three others were so badly injured, their chances of survival was reported as extremely slim in one local newspaper.
It being winter, I wondered how the people of Hillsdale managed such a devastating accident and learned that because no other means of transportation was available in town during the winter months, the residents took in the victims, hosting them for weeks, sometimes months according to their injuries. With a college that offered educational opportunities for both men and women, I felt I’d found the perfect recipe for romance!

What a GREAT story. Thank you, Patty.

  1. Fri Nov 15th,
    "Good morning, MaryLu, and Patty".
First off - Congratulations to last week's winner, R Merr !
Patty, I was totally intrigued by the story-line of your new book, "The Doctor's Bride".
Captivated - by the thought of a "marriage contract" (which I so cannot imagine); and that Joshua McLain and Katie Clark meet up after a train crash, now as grown-ups, but once having been childhood friends. Joshua "claiming" that they are bethrothed ... this just keeps getting better and better. Also, noting that "both" are Doctors ... that is really interesting too.
Yes, I want to share in your - "wild imagination and love of history" ... this book sounds exactly like what I would love to read !
Thanks MaryLu, for introducing us to Patty Smith Hall, today. And, please enter me into the contest.
Take care, and, God Bless, In Him, Brenda Hurley brennie7@hotmail.com

    1. Brenda, thank you so much for coming by! I'm a big fan of best friends falling in love--I did marry my best friend in the world 30+ years ago! So having Joshua and Katie share a childhood friendship feel natural for this story--and I loved how their parents play a role in the marriage contract that got these two together once they'd grown up!

  2. Yay, a fellow Southern belle! What interested me about the storyline was all the snow ;) as well as two trains headed in opposite directions on the same track...not very well planned out on their part!
    Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

    1. Thanks for coming by today, Callie! The reason these two trains were on the same track was that both were running behind schedule. Throw in a blizzard and you have all the makings of a real disaster!

  3. A fellow Georgia girl! Southerns no matter where we live! I am intrigued by the marriage contract. It has to be a conflict for them honoring their parents, being friends, yet freedom to choose. I would love to see how you work that out. It has to be fun!

  4. I am always intrigued by arranged marriages, Sometime, I am not sure they are such a bad idea. Good godly parents only want what is best for their children, just a thought.

  17. This book sounds so interesting. I enjoy reading books that throw together two characters that may not necessarily want to be together, and what better way to do that than have an arranged marriage? Plus, the idea of two trains crashing under those kind of circumstances (and having it be a true event) is fascinating.

  18. Hello ladies! I love the idea of the train wreck and the blizzard only adds to the appeal of the story. I though arranged marriages were left behind many years before this story happens so it also add an additional something that's different from most American based historical romances.

  21. I have this book on my to read list. I have a blizzard scene in my book too that I've had to do extensive research for because I live in TX and our idea of snow is anything over half an inch that's white. I love how you used a real life historical event to inspire a book. I am really looking forward to reading it, winning a copy would just be icing on the cake.

  27. What intrigues me is that people use to make arranged marriages by contract. Even now I can't imagine them doing that. The couple had no say in the decisions made by parents. How awful. Must have been some miserable marriages. Of course now days there are many miserable marriages from wrong choices. With so many having sex before marriage and also living together. I believe this causes them to think with their emotions instead because they really fall in love. As some Christian authors said, they are depending on their Harmones then. Also awed by the train wreck. Hard to believe there were not many deaths. And, people having to take in strangers for no telling how long. Now days people are afraid to chance it. I would love to win the book. MAXIE mac262(at)me(dot)com

  28. What intrigues me most about this story is that there were actually woman doctors back then in the 1800s even if it was the last half of the century. I have to say, I am pretty taken by this TV show called Dr. Quinne, Medicine Woman, which is about a lady doctor in the early 1900s and even then, when she first became a doctor, not many people went to her for medical help because they believed that she wasn't capable of being a good doctor because she was a woman. So I'd love to read this book, I absolutely love the 1800s, romance romance, action and suspense, and it sounds like this book contains all those things so I would enjoy reading it, I'm sure:D

    1. Mary, I actually googled Michigan disasters and came across a website that had each state's biggest natural and man-made disasters. When I read about this train wreck and the fact that the community took in the victims, I knew there was a romance in there somewhere! Thanks for coming by!

  31. I have to say that the first thing that caught my attention was that Katie was the doctor. The title led me to believe that the doctor was going to be a man. Then given the time period of this novel added to my belief that the doctor would be a man. This is the initial twist for me. I'm definitely adding it to my to-be-read list to find out how it turns out. Hopefully I'm blessed and win a copy so I don't have to wait "forever" to do so. Thanks for sharing this book with us.
