Why am I telling you this? Because so many people today have no understanding of the spirit realm, the existence of Satan and of all his demon-warriors. We are so flippant in what we say, what we sing, the places we go, that we have no idea the danger we are dabbling in. Now, I'm not saying these people caused the attack or are in any way to blame. (Read last Friday's post) This tragedy was perpetrated by evil men, inspired by Satan, intent on destroying life. But I can't help but wonder if as they worshiped Satan and God was forced out, if a door wasn't opened somewhere...or protection wasn't lifted.
The Scriptures say there is great power in the tongue, and we are held accountable for every idle word we speak. With our tongues we curse and bless. With our tongues we praise and worship the thing or person or being we choose.
In our quest to be accepted, cool, one of the in crowd, what are we willing to give up, what things are we willing to compromise on? And how many people actually stop and ask the most important question they could ever ask this side of eternity. "Is there a God, and if so, how do I know Him? And what does He expect of me?" Some may actually ponder that question for a minute or two and then shrug and walk away, thinking there's no way to know or if there is, it would take too much work to find out. Or even worse, people would look down on them for even asking.
The truth is, God loves all of His children. His heart breaks for every lost life, for every act of violence, every tragedy they suffer. He longs for them to turn to Him, to receive the sacrifice of Jesus, to be set from from the trap of the Devil and gain eternal life.
The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. 1 John 3:8
Satan is our enemy and his goal is to kill you. God wants to give you life, and give it to you abundantly. How do you find God? IF you seek Him with all your heart, you will find Him right where He said He would be.

Wow ... I had NO knowledge of what you shared today. Yes, I heard the name of the band that was playing at the Concert, but had not heard what song they were singing when the fatal attack occurred. Terrible lyrics, just terrible. And that the crowd of people had NO idea their lives were about to be wiped out ! To be singing along to that song in the first place ... bad enough. But NOT the words you'd want to be found in your mouth, as you are being shot to death !
Oh MaryLu .... that is just terrible, horrific.
How sobering that news is. A wake-up call for many, I hope.
I think of the verse that says -- Out of our mouths, we have the power to speak life or death.
May we be found speaking -- life ... Jesus' love, His mercy, kindness, forgiveness, and gift of eternal life !

ReplyDeleteThank you for this posting of those lyrics and how those poor people were escorting in the wickedness and did not even know it. I am praying that there were some who called out to God as death was all around them. I know my grandson listens to music that I can't understand the words for the blasting noise they call music. I do pray for him, but never thought of praying for his ears to not hear the words that are very bad. . Thank you for being obedient and showing others that evil is invading our youth through this kind of trash they call music.
So I am calling on the Lord to make the music of the youth senseless and not able to hear the words or understand them. I lift my grandson Matthew up to you Oh God, fill his ears and mind with your sweet words and your love. I pray that Matthew is filled with the desire to hear your sweet voice in his ears always. Thank you in advance for your answered prayer of this Grandmother .

So often, people don't care what lyrics say. I have such a issue with music and what I listen to. As a teenager, I just liked the beat etc. it means so much more to me today. Like the Bible says...they allowed "strange music".

Many people don't think about it, but satan was in charge of the music/worship in Heaven. Obviously he knows what he is doing. Don't we think Music is a powerful weapon that he uses? Guard your hearts...daily put on the full armor of God (starting with your mind)

So sad, yet believable. I have always told my kids to pay attention to song lyrics. And if they are singing a Christian praise song, to always make sure they are singing to Christ and not just singing to hear themselves. I won't listen to any songs that you can't clearly hear the lyrics.

ReplyDeleteDisclaimer: the lyrics aren't anything I approve of, and I find them disturbing. But Marylu, a friend of a friend barely survived these attacks, and his friend died. Watching my roommate frantically try to get in touch was terrifying and heartbreaking. This is an incredibly insensitive article and is cruel--anguishing. I pray none of the survivors or those who lost loved ones will ever see this post. There is a time for healing, and this post is salt on a wound, not salve. I know that many people are praising it for being "true" but if you speak the truth without love, it's as a clanging cymbal. This post will not encourage anyone to come to Christ--if anything, it will push them away (especially to have been written when only a week has passed!) Please, as a missionary, as a sister in Jesus who has always found your posts to be the epitome of both truth and sensitivity, I am begging you to put yourself in the shoes of those still coming to grips with the fact that they will have one less place to set for Christmas. Would this post draw you to Christ then? It wouldn't for me. It is the kindness of God that leads us to repentance, and kindness for Christians who didn't know any victims includes mourning with those who mourn. Do not judge the murdered who suffered more in those moments than we can ever imagine--leave that to God and offer compassion, not condemnation. Please. Please.
ReplyDeleteI honestly meant this post to be truth with love. That's why I ended it with how much God loves all of us and wants us to come to Him through the cross of Christ. I'm sorry that you took offense and found it cruel. It was not my intention at all. I cried over these victims. I have prayed for their loved ones over and over. I am desperate for everyone to know the love of Jesus and turn away from darkness. I have a real heart for young people who get so caught up in being accepted in the in crowd that they have no idea what they are doing. They dabble in spiritual things they don't understand, and it breaks my heart. But I feel a calling to wake people up to the truth. I appreciate very much your opinions and I will reread the post and see where I might be able to soften it and be more loving, but I believe Satan needs to be exposed for who and what he is so people are warned.
DeleteThere will always be someone who gets offended by what we say. If I knew someone who attended this concert, yes my heart would break at the loss, yet I would also wonder why they were there. Satan's presence was no doubt very strong there and those terrorists were fed by those lyrics and the people singing them. Like you said, some may have been there just following the crowd, to be cool......and God knows the hearts of them all. We can't tip toe around this subject. I pray that not only do the families of the slain find peace, but that they also find understanding.....and may God help us all. I also appreciate what you said about waking people up to the truth--agreed that that's important. I guess, though, that there's a time and a place for everything, and with everything still so raw, with victims not yet buried and people still fighting for their lives in hospitals, reading that they were "worshipping Satan" feels like... not the right time. I've been told that in my zeal for God, I can be a bit strong-worded... and the last thing I wish to do is turn someone away from the love and grace of God. However, I do believe in telling the truth, even if it may offend someone. Jesus often offended those around him. But I agree that perhaps my timing was off a bit. I have been following your posts for a while and they are nothing short of eye-opening and insightful.:) Never apologize for speaking the truth, I personally didn't find anything offensive in what you said, you simply stated a fact. People are responsible for their choices in life, starting from what to wear to the music they listen to and so on. I too believe that secular music( especially hardcore rock) has evil roots. We too had something terrible happen here in Romania( though it was under entirely different circumstances). There was this night club where many people lost their lives in a fire while chanting the songs of a local black metal group whose lyrics were openly worshipping Satan. I'm not saying that every secular song is evil, but you cannot dismiss the dark influence that this type of music has on young people especially.Words DO have power to bring life or death. You can either speak a blessing or throw a curse. Just like you, I feel deeply for all those poor souls who perished and for their families, but at the same time, let's take a closer look at what our children are listening to. Will we be called bigots? Most likely. But if we were to please men, we wouldn't be followers of Christ then. :)

Metallica, Black Sabbath... not really knowing the words, but I remember the darkness and depression and hopelessness that would cover over me at times. People need to be warned, even if they think we are crazy. Blessings!

Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
Music is second only to television in influencing and shaping the values of our children. How can you help your kids recognize the subtle seduction to evil in some contemporary music and encourage them to make wise choices about what they listen to? Here are some practical suggestions: Avoid the "do as I say, not as I do" syndrome. Before you can help your child evaluate his music, you'd better evaluate your own (Matthew 7:4, 5). The lyrics of some soft rock, easy listening, and country-western tunes are as suggestive and immoral as those performed by heavy metal groups. One of the best ways to teach your child to avoid harmful lyrics is by modeling the same behavior.
Be willing to find middle ground. Your personal taste in music should not be the determining factor for what you allow your children to listen to. Nor should your child's taste determine what you listen to. Try to find some middle ground with your child when it comes to the kinds of music you will allow in your home. The key is to teach your child to be moderate and discerning, just as you are.
Stay informed and involved. When was the last time you looked through your child's music collection or sat down with him to listen to and discuss the lyrics of his favorite songs? You won't be able to understand the impact of the music in his life unless you are aware of it and what he thinks about it.
Take time to listen to your children's emotional struggles and notice how the music they listen to influences their behavior. Be as encouraging about their good choices of music as you are corrective of the bad choices. Someday they will thank you for the harmony you helped bring to their lives.

DeleteYour thoughts on the Paris victims was 100% on target. My family and I are very fortunate to belong to a church that teaches God's word and warns on the dangers of dabbling in things that are not of God. Unfortunately, there are too many Christians that do not understand the spiritual realm and don't see the danger when engaging in activities that are infested with satanic influences. We need to be vigilant and closely discern what we bring into our homes, watch on television, listen on the radio, etc. The devil is always looking for ways to infiltrate our lives, therefore, we cannot allow even the slightest crack for him to enter.

I agree with you completely about TV and radio and books and all the things Satan can use to get into our homes and lives. He only needs a crack. DeleteI am not a Christian, but I am a youngish person who likes good music. Am I going to hell? Probably. That's fine, okay. I'll miss my mom but at least the music will be good. Okay. But to accuse me of being a Satan-worshipper is one thing. To accuse innocent concert-goers whose spiritual planes & complexities & capacity for love you have no way of knowing (Please, Google "Antoine Leiris' love letter to terrorists") wives and husbands and children who got gunned down to death in a free space, by Islamic fundamentalists? To accuse THEM? That is not okay. Jesus said, "But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would have not condemned the guiltless." Those people were innocent because they were living a moment of celebration, and hope, and connection. They were dancing.

He would have helped them be strong and said to each Western beautiful person whose only crime was living, "Je t'aime."
Hi buttermybeer, No, you are not going to hell for listening to any kind of music. That's not what I said. What I said was that when people worship Satan, even unwittingly, they are opening doors to evil. I never accused the concert goers of causing what happened to them. The thing is, there's an entire spiritual realm that we don't see all around us where demons and angels are battling for the souls of men. Many people don't understand or even believe in that, but it's true nonetheless. As a non-Christian, I'm sure that sounds crazy to you. However, people don't understand that when they dabble in the occult, witchcraft or satan worship, they are opening up doors for evil. That was my point... that we should all be careful what we sing or listen to... But that isn't what sends people to hell. What sends people to hell is rejecting God. He loves all people so much that in order to save us He sent His only Son, Jesus, to die on our behalf.. to sacrifice Himself and take the punishment we deserved. All we have to do is receive that free gift He offers. If we don't. If we reject it, then God can't save us and we've made our choice. The truth is none of us are guiltless. We all have turned away from God. That's why He sent Jesus to reconcile with us.
DeleteYes, Jesus loved all those people at the concert. He loves them dearly. And yes, He loves mercy and justice and love and peace and joy. He is all those things! But if anyone rejects His free gift, He cannot help them. He is the only way. I'm happy to hear you know some of His Words. I encourage you to read more of them. The Gospel of John is a wonderful book that can change your life.

MaryLu, thank you for refusing to be silent about those truths God has laid upon your heart. I pray God uses this post to speak to people and draw them nearer to Him, and in so doing - further away from the evils of this world. As a Christian who relies on God to guide me in every aspect of my life - as He gives me strength for, and peace through, the trials - I have felt, and weathered, many storms satan has brought my way in his effort to derail me from following God. I have also witnessed his power and control in the lives of others - the feelings of being in that presence IS very dark, depressing, and hopeless.
ReplyDeleteLike you, I have a desire to make people aware of the lures of satan and his destruction - and also the peace and joy found in the love, grace, and forgiveness of God. Satan is alive, roaming this earth - seeking whom he may devour, he has many tricks in which to do it. Music is just one of the seemingly innocent (to many) ways he often uses to make a crack through which to slip, in his quest to control lives.
Yes, I'm sure we do sound crazy to those people unaware of satans' wiles - but God knows our hearts, our desires to help lead others to eternal life through Him, and will honor our efforts.

ReplyDeleteI mean no disrespect, but I'mr really confused. You say you're not blaming the victims - but then, what exactly ARE you saying by "they opened the door for evil?" Sorry, but that is blaming the victims in nice language (it is possible to blame Satan, the murderers, and the victims all at once).
I see many commenters praising your obedience, but none praising your compassion or love for the least of these...like, say, those gunned down, those whose lives were ended. When did Jesus praise religiosity over compassion?
Furthermore, according to your beliefs, many of these people are in hell. Does the tragedy of that strike you? How can you function believing this? Yet you post something that blames them.
Mary Lu, I am a Christian. I am hurt, staggered, and ashamed to call myself a Christian if it means saying that people who were gunned down opened the door for evil. Perhaps we should focus on making people aware of God and His love, not fear of Satan.

I felt led to post it and warn people about the power of words, the danger of dealing with the occult and satan worship. As I said, these people opened the door to evil by praising satan. Whether or not that caused or allowed the Jihadists to do what they did, I have no idea. My intent was to warn others. God has called me to be a watchman, to warn and to wake up the church. ReplyDeleteMy problem is basically this (and I sincerely hope this doesn't offend you further): you are using a version of the "but she was dressed immodestly so she invited rape" argument. Mayyyyybe dressing provocatively for a guy's attention is bad. Definitely singing lyrics that romanticize evil are bad (I would question whether they literally mean Satan or are using devil as a metaphor for a dark individual, but either way the romanticizing of evil is disturbing). But that doesn't mean they invited what happened to them, and to say otherwise *is* victim-blaming. That is what actually worries me - it seems that in our desire to live righteously, we do not put the guilt on the proper individuals.
No worries Kelley. I have pretty thick skin. :-) I Do understand your point, I really do. Have you read my last Friday's post on the Paris attack? You'll see that I blame the entire thing on Satan and evil, not on any of the victims. However, my point is, that we must accept that there are consequences for our actions. I'll leave it at that.
