What is your passion?

Do you know how to figure out what your passion is?  Answer this question honestly.
What is the one thing you think MOST about?  What consumes your thoughts during your free time?  What is the thing that most often pops into your head as you are just waking up?

Is it...
  • Your boyfriend or husband
  • Wanting a boyfriend or husband (LOL)
  • Girlfriend?
  • School
  • Your job, coworkers, awards, promotions
  • Kids
  • Hobbies
  • Next vacation
  • Wanting a vacation
  • Health
  • Food! Yum
  • TV
  • Movie stars
  • Youth!
  • Money
  • Bills

So much to think about in this day and age. None of those things are bad, either. But what gets you excited? What is your focus?

There's a story about a man who went to his pastor and asked him "How can I live a blessed life?"  The pastor said, "Follow me"  and took him out to a lake. When the pastor led the man out into the water, the man thought the pastor intended to baptize him. But, lo and behold, the pastor forced the man under the water and held him there.  The man struggled and struggled as he slowly ran out of air all the while wondering why his pastor wanted to kill him.  Just when he thought he would die, the pastor released him. Coughing and gasping, the man rose and pushed away from the pastor. "Why did you do that?"  The pastor said. "What was the one thing you wanted most of all when I held you under? What was the one thing you would have given anything for?"  The man shouted "Air!"
The pastor said. "That's how badly you must love God and want to serve Him if you want a blessed life."

He didn't say if you want to be saved. But if you want to be blessed. That doesn't mean riches or fame or comfort.... but it means excitement, fulfillment, joy!  Things money can never buy.  However I would venture to say that depending on your lack of interest in God, your salvation may be on the line as well.

Jesus said we must "love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all your soul, with all your mind.
Yet, how many of us do that? Is God our passion?  Do we think about Him more than anything else?  Is He our number 1 reason for getting up in the morning?  I must admit to you that for me, that's not always the case.  Yet Jesus is very clear

“He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it."  Matthew 10:37-39

God didn't sent His only Son to this earth to live a difficult life, be tortured, rejected, and crucified so that we could simply receive Him and then go about our lives pleasing ourselves.  Yet, that seems to be a disease rampant in the Western church. This concerns me a great deal, as you can probably tell if you read many of my posts. I fear so many Christians have run out of the oil of the Holy Spirit and when Jesus comes to claim His bride, they will not be ready and be left behind.

In Jesus' own words.

So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth. Revelation 3:16

Let us all pray that God helps us make Him our deepest passion, and that our goal for every day He grants us here on earth will be to do His will, learn of Him, and be so passionate about Him that our enthusiasm spills over onto the lost and lures them into the light. There is nothing more important than God.  I would wager that not a single person admitted into Heaven has ever said, Yup, I did enough for God. More than likely everyone is saying, "I wish I had time to do more."

  1. Great post, Marylu! I know exactly what you mean. I have friends who claim to be Christians simply because they got introduced to Jesus as a child, but other than that, they live for themselves. It wasn't until a few years ago that I realized that. I used to be great friends with someone up until I surrendered my life to Christ four years ago. Even though we had previously known each other for nine years, she didn't understand why all of a sudden I had gotten "extremely religious" and felt that I was monitorizing her every activity. And that while she confessed receiving the Lord when she was 5-7 years old! I too first heard the Gospel as a child, but it wasn't until many years laters that I repented and turned my life over to Him ( at 24). I prayed about this whole thing and I asked for forgiveness if, by any chance, it was my lack of wisdom which led my friend to believe such things, but I just can't shake off the feeling that it was my faith which drove her away. And the irony is that she's supposed to be a believer. I mean she is a moral, upstanding person, there's nothing to argue about here. But her every day life is filled with all sorts of wordly things that have nothing to do with the Lord. This thing with my friend has been quite a turmoil for me because whenever I try to reach out to her, she just seems to avoid me. It's not just my imagination. But I realize that there's a price to pay for following Him with all our hearts, not just mentally or intellectually.I have NO regrets about this, but I admit I was hurt by stuff that came from the person I least expected to act like this.
Thanks for sharing and for reading my post!

    1. Thanks Rose! Thanks for sharing your story. I'm so sorry you lost a friend over this, and I can tell it still hurts you. I have also found that people who are not on fire for God find it very difficult to be around people who are. Many members of my own family have accused me of being too religious. Jesus said we would have enemies among our own households... and I believe it. There is a cost for following Jesus with all our heart, but it is a cost well worth it. :-)

  2. YES!!!!
This is something that has been on my mind a lot lately too. May God revive a passionate spirit in His church! I want to love Jesus so much that the 'stuff' doesn't matter - that the worries, the irritations, the way others rub me the wrong way (!), don't matter to me. That I can be so focused and in love with Him that it would pour out of my life into those around me. JOY filled! :) :) :)

    1. Amen Caroline! I've been praying the same thing! Wake up the church, Lord! Bring them back to their first love. And for me too! Let this world fade away and let me only see Him. :-)

  3. Bravo on this post, my friend! So much concern and passion, without hitting us over the head with the ugly stick...aka judgment. You always give me so much to think about. Hugs!

  4. I agree, Chappy - always something to ponder after reading MaryLu's posts. PTL!! Reminders help keep us humble, more attuned to Him and less to the ways of the world. The world seeks to draw us away from Him, we must continually keep our eyes on Him if we are to be successful in making Him our passion.

Love, prayers, & hugs - MaryLu!!
