I asked Debbie Lynne to explain the difference between Medieval and Renaissance
Medieval Era 5th to 16th Century or Renaissance 14th to the 16th Century
The Medieval Era and the Renaissance Era is a bit convoluted when one era ends and the other begins. They overlap. It’s too bad it can’t be as simple as the Elizabethan but then that overlaps too! Have you ever wondered why some stories are called medieval and not Renaissance? It has a lot to do with the culture at the time.As you may already know Renaissance means “Awakening”. And this was a new awakening or new beginning in many areas of the medieval person’s life. Imagine how long it would take to write a book when books were written by hand. During the medieval time periods, books were painstakingly hand written. The printing press revolutionized books and changed the literary culture in Renaissance Period and forever. Writers also switched from Latin and Greek to vernacular.
Another of the big changes was in art. During the Renaissance Period we see great artists like Michelangelo—think of his work on the Sistine Chapel, Leonardo da Vinci, and Dante. The artists from this time period focused on the beauty of men and woman as well as a deep religious conviction entwined with their artwork. Artwork from the late medieval time period also had a lot to do with religion and often times was commissioned by the church. But the artwork of medieval time was of a Gothic nature. One of the popular examples of Gothic Artwork is the Notre Dame Cathedral.
A third difference we see between the two was in the church. During the medieval time period the people were strongly influenced by the Roman Catholic Church. The church’s views, laws, and words were considered as coming from God, Himself. But during the Renaissance period things began to change. There were questionable practices in the church, among other things, that led to the fall of a universal church. The Renaissance Period saw changes in religion and the emergence of humanism.
One last interesting fact. The Renaissance Period began in Florence, Italy. Times were not like they are today. There was no internet, planes, and newspapers to spread the word to other areas. It was a slow process and that was part of the reason we see such a convolution of when the Medieval Period ended and Renaissance Period actually began. Being a slow spread, some cities and countries had moved into the Renaissance Era while the cultural change had not reached other areas leaving them in the Medieval time period.

Historical Christian fiction is my favorite genre to read, but I must confess I haven't read anything from the Medieval or Renaissance time periods. Sounds like I definitely need to start! DeleteI prefer the Renaissance Period. The Medieval is too Catholic for me.
ReplyDeleteHey Nancy. I understand where you are coming from on that. However, the time I write in is around the Wycliff and lollards. They started seeing there was a problem within the church and started moving away from it. My characters are more about a personal relationship with a living God than church. I hope you get a chance to one of them. :)
