What is Real Worship?

There's something about our modern church services that has been bothering me for quite some time. It's what they call "the Worship". For most churches, this usually happens at the beginning of the service and consists of a band or musician on a stage singing and playing music and a big screen where the words to the song are posted so everyone can follow along. Afterward as people are leaving the sanctuary, you may hear comments like "Great Worship today"  or "The worship team was really great today".  For some reason, comments like that have always bothered me. To me, in most churches I've attended, I would call the "Worship" more like a concert. The band and singers preform on stage, and the people in the audience watch and sing along if they feel like it. But is this what God calls true worship?

Don't get me wrong. I know that some people in the church are truly worshiping the Lord during "the Worship" .  Their hearts and minds are solely focused on the Lord and they are using the words of the song to express their love for Jesus, their appreciation. Yet, I would venture to say that most people are really not thinking about the Lord at all. They may be singing, but their minds are on lunch or the football game later on, or maybe they're thinking about how good they are singing and they hope others will notice.

I'm not even talking about much of what is modern day worship songs, many of which focus on man and not on God. (Bring back those old hymns!)

So what is real worship? What does God call worship?

We know from John 4:24 that  " God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."

  But what does that mean?

First of all "truth" means we need to be sincere in Who we are worshiping and Why and keep our thoughts on Him and not on ourselves.

In the Spirit means that we should allow God's Holy Spirit within us to guide our worship, whether it be in song, proclamations, thanksgiving, tongues, or quiet adoration.

God has what He calls "Acceptable Worship".  If you study the word "worship" throughout the Bible, you'll see many many examples of what God calls False worship. People who honor Him with their lips but their hearts are far from Him, along with people who worship other gods.

Let us therefore, receiving a kingdom that is firm and stable and cannot be shaken, offer to God pleasing service and acceptable worship, with modesty and pious care and godly fear and awe; Hebrews 12:28

Notice the conditions. Modesty, Pious Care, Godly Fear, and Awe.  Basically be humble, devoted, reverent and in awe of God Himself.

But what does Real Worship look like practically?  Is it singing, lifting one's hands, being grateful.

James gives us some practical physical examples of real external worship

External religious worship that is pure and unblemished in the sight of God the Father is this: to visit and help and care for the orphans and widows in their affliction and need, and to keep oneself unspotted and uncontaminated from the world. James 1:27

Interesting. So when we help the poor and needy, when we give of ourselves to others, we are actually worshiping God!

AND when we separate ourselves from this sinful world and pursue holiness and don't purposely willfully sin, then we are also worshiping God!

These are great examples of worship, as is singing and lifting ones hands, and being grateful. In truth, however, real worship starts in the heart. You can do all of the above and not really be worshiping if in your heart you don't either know the Lord or really love Him. Giving to the poor, avoiding sin, singing, etc are all outward signs of worship, but they may or may not reflect what's in your heart.

Here's the real test. What is spiritual worship? Worship that comes from the heart, a heart wholly devoted to God..

I appeal to you therefore, brethren, and beg of you in view of all the mercies of God, to make a decisive dedication of your bodies, presenting all your members and faculties, as a living sacrifice, holy, devoted, consecrated and well pleasing to God, which is your reasonable service and spiritual worship. Romans 12:1

Real Worship is submitting all we are, all we have, and even our entire bodies to God for His service, to use as He wants. To allow Him to sanctify us (make us holy), to be Lord of our lives! Notice Paul says that after what God has done for us, doing this is reasonable. In other words, it's the least we can do!

So, is worship singing, dancing, being grateful, helping the poor, lifting our hands in praise, speaking in tongues, being kind to others, allowing God to sanctify us, avoiding sin?  Yes! All of the above and more.  But only as it comes from a person who loves Jesus with all their heart and is fully submitted to Him.

As I studied this, I realized that many things I do during the day are worship. Every time I am led by the Holy Spirit and I obey. Every time I go out of my way to help someone or give to the poor, or visit the sick. Every time I get on my knees and thank God for all His blessings. Every moment I spend reading His Word and Praying. Every time I resist the devil and his temptations. Every time I open my mouth and share the Gospel and His love with someone else. ALL these things are worship if I truly love God!

So, don't limit your worship to a band on Sunday morning. Know that God sees all your little acts of worship throughout the week and He smiles down at every one of them!

  2. As a singer/songwriter and musician I have often struggled with this topic! Thanks for reminding us what true worship is! I can feel the Holy Spirit when I am singing at home alone or in church. When I am up front at church “leading”, I find it harder to actually worship even though I see this as an act of service (leading and playing the songs)- it’s distracting to be up there and concentrating on not messing up!๐Ÿ˜ I know the Lord gives me the strength and ability to do what I do and I am blessed to be able to do it!
As for the songs… well that can be a controversial subject for sure! Psalms says to “sing a new song” but maybe that just means to sing with a new heart. I write songs but seldom share them in church because I like to lead songs people know. But if you think about it ALL songs (hymns too) were new to us at one time. Our church mixes old and new-usually one or two hymns with newer songs. I try to find songs that are worshipful and lift up the name of Jesus.
I truly believe that Satan hates worship music and is hard at work to try to cause at much chaos as possible.
I know when I lead, the Holy Spirit helps me not be afraid and to just do what God created me to do!
    Blessings! BevH

    1. Being a worship singer is such a great ministry, Bev! You follow after King David, who was always singing praise to God! I can't imagine how hard it must be to be in front of so many people, but like you said, the Lord is there with you. I'm glad you find songs that lift up Jesus. Many of the modern "worship" songs seem to focus on man. Yup. Satan hates worship music. After all, he was in charge of that in heaven. Keep singing and worshiping the Lord, Bev... it's a great gifting and a true blessing to the church and to God!

  3. Hello Sister in Christ,

Amen to this! Worship is important, but what is more important in the eyes of God is the sincerity of the praise. I have seen montages and TV commercials where churchgoers praise and sing songs of worship, with some even holding their hands up.

In the past, and sometimes even now, I may wonder that these people who appear to praise and worship the Lord jubilantly in church, do they still remain the same pure-hearted Christian once they step outside the church or go back to their everyday lives? I know I should resist judgment, but I have faced a situation only God knows how many times in the past where I have had rude, insincere, and cruel encounters with people or those who seem to be polite, but later I suspected it was a facade to get me falsely believing that I made some new “friends.” The point is, they can fully prove they love and abide in the Lord through worship and sermons, but in real life, they may be heartless and judgmental towards people. I can bet people I have met in the past were like this, and the major question is: how would God feel about such hypocrisy? This may be why I have never attended church as a regular routine and after seeing how the world is now and how people have become, I am relieved and thankful I did not, for I have come to accept and love God in my own terms and with a Bible I purchased long time ago.

God must know I have suffered at the hands of two-faced insincere people and therefore revealed to me through being unpopular at school, even in the worship club that I attended, and on social media while watching other people have the glamorous time of their lives with “real friends.” These have bothered me for some time, but very recently did I feel like I have gone through a transformation in which I no longer care about those. Maybe it is God’s way of telling me that the End is near and He would like me to trust Him that He has true Brothers and Sisters in Heaven waiting to welcome me and prove that I am loved and not hated in Heaven. When that time comes, I will see myself praising and worshipping the Lord everyday thanking Him for His promises of true love, sincere appreciation, and of course, eternal life.

I normally pray to the Lord (giving thanks for the day, confessing any sins, and praying for requests) before retiring to bed, but lately I have gotten busy with lulling my children to sleep that I doze off with them. When I finally wake up, it is past midnight, and I quietly got out of bed to go to a window and pray to the Lord with the drapes revealing the night sky. It has become a regular routine of mine and I feel that it may indicate a true dedication to the Lord especially with sacrificing some sleep. Do you agree Sister?

To close, I remember some worship songs I felt were very impactful were The Heart of Worship, I Could Sing of Your Love Forever, and I Could Only Imagine, along with some Christmas songs such as Joy to the World and Silent Night. I know the music in Heaven would be far more holy and I will continue to keep looking up for the Rapture to happen and finally make it a reality. Peace and Blessings from a Brother in Christ.

    1. Absolutely Brother, Worship means nothing if it comes from an insincere heart that truly doesn't love or follow Jesus. And yes, there are many such people in church. Tares among the wheat. Jesus said we would know them by their fruit and the people you speak of are not bearing good fruit. I'm glad you have forgiven them and are letting it all go. Let go of any bitterness and resentment too! They aren't worth it, and their opinions of you do not reflect on how God highly values and loves you. Social media is so fake. Most of those people don't have the glamorous lives they pretend to have and all the friends either.
The Lord wanted me to share something with you that you already know, but He has experienced more rejection, more hypocrisy, more heartache than any other human. ALL his best friends, including the three who were closest to Him abandoned Him in His hour of need. Even though they had sworn to die with Him! Then He was spit on, insulted, punched, and mocked by the very people He was there to save. He hung on the cross completely naked in front of all as they continued to tease and mock Him. All while He suffered the most agonizing pain any human endured. He was rejected by everyone he knew and loved. So, He knows, He understands your pain and others who have suffered abuse. And yet...on that cross, He asked God to forgive them all. He wants you to do the same. In fact, He wants you to pray for those people who hurt you. Pray for their salvation and redemption. And then put them out of your mind, and think about them no more. You are so exceedingly precious to God. Never forget that.
And yes, I love your nightly routine! What a blessing to the Lord and I bet He looks forward to it every night... to that special time you have together with Him!

  4. Greetings Previous Daughter of our Beautiful Father,

I love this subject. I have had the privilage of worshiping our Holy God in a number of places. When you look around ( and yes, at times I do) you get a great perspective of where people hearts are. Sure, there are always some who just give the lip service. Some to hear their own voice. But as you observe the movement of the Spirit in the sanctuary, you will find those who are caught up to that third heaven. In His presence. Sometimes it's an act of worship and praise just to see God moving in the praises of His people.
I've seen this in Catholic churches, Evangelical, and oh my, that little Pentecostals church. Man, the hearts of those people soared to the heaven in un bridled adortation ! In fact, that " sing a new song" come from Psalm 96: 1Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth. I'll never forget one of the Elders wife was a very timid and shy, and very loving lady. She was leading with that song, and she sang like an Angel, and she bounced off the altar, kicking off her shoes and danced some kind of what looked like an Irish jig. When the song was over she humbly slid her shoes back on and returned to the stage. This was no gimmick, this was just someone moving out in the Spirit, pouring out their love for God before thew congregations! We used to sing a song, I think from Psalm 22 The Lord reside in the praises of His people !

I agree Sister, all and every thing we do should be done as unto the Lord. Love the script from James, acts of kindness. And just because someone isnt "always" doing that doesnt mean they are not sincere in their love for God. We all , are only human. We all have good and bad days.

When I went to the Charismatic church, the worship there could also be Heavenly. But at time it was forced. The pastor there, often tried to lead people into an "experiential encounter" with God. The pastor himself leads worship at times and there is always something lost I think. In his book he lists 7 level to enter into worship, I think thats a disaster. But thats the Prosperity gospels poison that is infecting many many churches now a day's. Yet even there, you will always find those who are so caught up in the Spirit of honoring the King, they dont even notice the rest.

Can we even imagine what it sounded like in Davids day. Or even in Moses day. Thousands and thousands all clanging symbols and crying out to the LORD ? Do we dare to imagine what it will be like in Heaven ?

    Children of Light
Eph 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to reckless indiscretion. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.…

But the ultimate form of worship. I think what is most acceptable to our Heavenly Father, is when we praise and worship and give Him glory in the midst of heartache, when we've lost our way and cry out to Him, even when we've sinned and our sorrowful hearts pouring out gratitude for His unending forgiveness.
Eph 3: Paul's Prayer for the Ephesians
…17so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. Then you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 will have power, together with all the saints, to comprehend the length and width and height and depth 19of the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.…

here is a video of what I consider an anointed worship. Note the Holy Spirit washing over the chello player. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPhGJTSTYV4

I miss those days of corporate worship.

    1. Brother, I can't wait for worship in Heaven. How glorious that will be! Loved the story of that normally reserved lady getting up and dancing! And I agree that praising our Lord and being thankful in the middle of suffering is the ultimate expression or worship and love and the very hardest to do. The last church we attended had a good worship band and the songs even gave praise to our Lord but they had a schedule to keep and a 3-4 song limit and just when I started to feel the Spirit pouring out upon the people, Bam! It was time for announcements. Broke my heart. Let the Spirit control the service!! But that rarely happens.
We'll have lots of corporate worship in heaven, Brother!

  5. I remember during a praise session back then where someone told a story about how he and a friend were at a Dodgers game and his friend adamantly insisted that Dodgers will win the game despite being behind on points. After asking his friend again, his friend said something impactful: “do you know that I worship the Dodgers?” That one word, “worship,” led him to pursue and learn about Christ - isn’t it amazing how just one word could transform someone to pursuing a relationship with Christ?

I read some commenter’s post regarding the Rapture from one of your past blog posts and I was wondering: if the Tribulation is triggered by the signing of the Daniel Covenant, may the Rapture possibly take place around or shortly after the Ezekiel 38-39 War based on your analysis? In view of how Russia is making headlines again in regards its war on Ukraine, could that war really be in the near future if it strikes Israel, especially with how Iran would most likely appreciate support in its goal to destroy Israel? Trump also said that he may know of Putin’s plan regarding peace in the “coming weeks” - so next month in September really does seem promising since that is when the “Peace and Security” meeting will take place?

I also heard that National Guard troops deployed to DC are not only increasing, but they are also authorized to carry weapons publicly as a show of force - isn’t this another step towards setting up the Beast Empire’s agenda of establishing this kind of system to track down and persecute anyone disloyal to the AC? Could it be only a matter of time before it reaches major Californian cities such as San Francisco and of course, Los Angeles? It is just dumbfounding how people would willingly approve of and cheer for all this: their own demise, per your last post, isn’t it?

    1. That's a great story. yes, One word is all it takes some times. We never know how many people we will impact for the Lord.
Yes, next month is very very promising! I believe that yes, the rapture must take place either before, during, or shortly after the Gog-Magog war. Putin has certainly been backed into a corner and I'm sure he will have enough and have to do something. Attack Israel? Maybe. They have many resources he needs.
I agree about Trump's DC forces. I've heard other cities are doing the same. This was never supposed to happen in America. But everyone I talk to says it's a good thing to get rid of crime. They won't think so when these forces turn against Christians and anyone who doesn't obey the AC and his empire. I'm amazed at how dumb people are these days.
      Blessings!
