Today, we will learn about the heroine of the story, Marianne Denton
Brief Description: Marianne Denton is plain. At least that’s how people describe her. At age 25with mousy brown hair, lackluster brown eyes, and a figure on the plump side, she rarely turns heads in her hometown of Baltimore. Possessing no particular skills and with nothing remarkable about her appearance, she has resigned herself to a life caring for her ailing mother and younger sister. After all, she can hardly compete for a husband when there are dozens of other young ladies much more beautiful and talented than her. She has no time for courting anyway. After her father died, leaving the family destitute, she spends her time trying to support her family and purchase her mother’s essential medicines. But the money is running out. The inheritance her father left her can only be touched upon her marriage. And there are not exactly suitors lining at her door, vying for her hand. Despite her waning faith in God, Marianne is a caring, loving person who is extremely loyal to those she loves.
Strengths: Kind, Patriotic, Charitable, Loyal, Intelligent, Persevering
Weaknesses: Untrusting, Stubborn, Insecure, Pessimist
Quirks: Marianne wears a ruby ring that her father gave her once. A distant, unloving father, he rarely had a kind word for Marianne, nor did he often give her gifts. Therefore, this ring means a great deal to Marianne. It represents the father she wishes she had—one who made her feel valued and loved. When she’s nervous or agitated, she twists the ring around her finger.
Inspiration: To me, Marianne represents every normal, average woman. There is nothing remarkable about her appearance or her abilities that would make anyone stop and take a second look. She’s the woman in the crowd that nobody sees, the girl that never gets asked out, the student whose grades are always average, the face everyone forgets, and the girl who knows her place in the food chain of popularity. I’ve been wanting to write a story about such a woman for a long time because I believe there are many women out there who can relate to her. Let’s face it, not many of us are top models or intellectual giants. Most of us just meander through life, doing ordinary things and really not expecting great adventures to come our way. But that’s not true. God loves the underdog, and He has great adventures and romance for everyone who turns to Him and surrenders to His will.

MaryLu, you never cease to amaze me. You hit the nail on the head with this one. You may pick up a few more readers with this story. Please enter me into any contest you are having. Thanks, and have a great day!
ReplyDeleteI like that Marianne is loyal and patriotic. I think it is cool that she wears a ruby ring. My birthday is in July, so it is my birthstone! It is also special that her father gave it to her. His love language must be gift giving. My grandpa was like that! My mom always said that was the way he showed his love to her.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to read this book!
Thank you,

Sounds like another great story! Though it's not a pirate tale, I'll still be on the lookout for a dashing hero... ;-) I'm glad that Marianne sounds like a more relatable heroine. I'm sure her story will be a treat to read! I have no doubt because I have yet to read one of your books that I haven't!! :-)

Hi Marylu, I love all of your books. And this one sounds like it will be just as good. The character Marianne sounds like me. We both live in Baltimore albeit in different centuries, the ruby is my birthstone, I'm very much close to my family and want the best for them, and there are no suitors knocking my door down, but I don't let that get me down. I pray to GOD to keep me patient and teach all I need to know in oder to be more of a godly young woman, future wife and mother. Thank you for the books that you write and keep on writing, I pray that I will become a writer also sharing the love of God and the gospel of JESUS CHRSIT. Thank you so much.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to read the book. But I'm a bit strange about NOT wanting to know anything before I read the book. Especially if it's a favorite author of mine (like you) where I know I'm going to love it and don't need to know anything about the book. I love to be surprised when I read the book!

My best friend and I are so excited for this book! We both have a very hard time picking out a favorite book by you, and it tends to be whatever the last one we read was. I have the feeling that this will be a new favorite!
ReplyDeleteYou'll probably find it funny, but I found Redemption the other day ago at a Christian outlet store, and about had a heart attack! I was so excited. Right now the Reliance is the only book from you that I don't have.

Marianne sounds like a genuine heroine, refreshing in today's bombardment of fake reality TV. (A la
ReplyDeleteThe Bachelor and The Hills) I'd love to read about someone real like her!
Ooh, this sounds awesome! I honestly don't think I have ever read a romance book where the heroine wasn't described as at least pretty (but in most books, she's always drop-dead gorgeous). It think that's one of the reasons I liked the new Robin Hood movie so much - they made Maid Marion a plain, mid-thirties woman and didn't weigh her down with makeup and fancy costumes.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, Surrender the Heart sounds fresh and much-needed in the book market!
Thanks for giving us the chance to win a copy! :-)

OK. Here's honesty. At first I thought, 'Aw, a plain person. That's nice, but not very exciting.' This shows some shallowness on my part, as it isn't the outside that makes us truly beautiful, but the inside and God transforming us to look like Jesus. Thank God He looks at the heart and not like man (or me, sometimes) who looks at the outward appearances to think well of someone.
ReplyDeleteThank you for pulling that out of me :-) and please enter me in your contest (lol- I can use a book like this)!

I can somewhat understand how Marianne feels about the father she wishes she had who will make her feel valued and loved. My father is still around but in another country, so basically I live with my mother and younger sister. The only kind of love he would give my sister and I was doing activities we wanted to do, and never hugged us. Though we only got one hug if I went on a week long trip by ourselves... Marianne sounds very interesting and the book too! Wants me to dig in and read what happens to her! Thanks for sharing!

I am intrigued by the heroine in your new book! It will be fascinating to read how plain Marianne finds romance amidst tumultuous 1812 while caring for an ailing mother.
ReplyDeleteI love Marianne! She is every (or most) women. Even those that are above average seldom see themselves that way. Can't wait to read this book.
ReplyDeleteI am sooo excited that this book is out early!!! Marianne sounds like a wonderfully REAL character! Thank you for the excellent books you write:)
ReplyDeleteThe character sounds wonderful! I'm excited to see how Marianne will accomplish her needs for her family and feel loved and cherished also. A lot of novels with have an attractive main character (which is no problem). Having something different, I believe, will attract new readers to understand and put themselves in Marianne's position. I am very thrilled to read this story
ReplyDeleteVanessa
You've got me hooked just with your character description of Marianne. Can't wait to be introduced to the man God puts in her path.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Becca
Well, I'm here writing something to get my name in the draw. Yes, Marianne does sound like an ordinary girl next door type, like you, me and most of the people we all know. I'm going to be the odd woman out and admit that most of the time I'd rather read about someone different than myself!! I know quite well what it's like to be the plain girl, so I don't have any problem identifying emotionally. I guess maybe fiction to me is supposed to be an escape from the more painful aspects of our ordinary reality. MaryLu, am I making sense to you at all? Anyway...please sell me on her character. I'm looking forward to reading it, for sure!
ReplyDeleteJust thought I'd let you know that my husband got back from his trip to the US and brought back The Raven Saint for me. I loved it!! Yeah, writing the bad boy Rafe must have been quite different for you than the saintly Nathaniel Mason. I liked them both. And poor Grace (whom I didn't much like in the other books of the series) did turn out to have some redeeming qualities. I confess I stayed up til 3:30 a.m. finishing this one!
God bless you, keep writing and I'll cheer!

It made me smile and cry at the same time because I see a lot of myself in her at times...I love all her qualities, especially being faithful to her family!!! I think she really is beautiful...but just hasn't realized it yet...and she's a diamond in the rough :) :) whoever finds her will be a lucky man indeed. Hugs from Oregon, Heather :)
ReplyDeleteI can relate to her. I'm not the prettiest flower in the garden and it's not easy to pick me out from a crowd. But that's ok!

How exciting to have your book released early! I have enjoyed all your books I have read so far, and I am sure this one is going to be a favorite. Marianne sounds like someone I will love getting to know. Thanks for the contest and a chance to win this free book.
ReplyDeleteHi MaryLu
ReplyDeleteHow are you? I'm doing better. Thanks for all the ways you've supported me I'm finding my way again.
Thanks for writing this story I think at one time or another there is a voice in all our ears that tells us we're no one in particular and not worthy of time or attention. Thankfully there's always the Voice telling the truth too: that we're important, worthy through the Son and loved beyond compare.
I like your heroine because she's not like most heroines who's slim, intelligent and full of confidence and poise. She's the rest of us who is afraid to venture out unsure and hesitant.
Can't wait to read her story
Hugs and Blessings
Karien
ohh she sounds like an intriging characdter!!

I have long since been a fan of your books. They always seem to teach me a lesson of God's loving kindness as I finish the last page.
ReplyDeleteThe way you've described this book makes me think that many a woman will benefit from it. Although it is fiction I find these books tug at the hearts of people everyone who are looking for a quiet reminder that God is indeed faithful. When everything looks bleak we only have to tilt our heads up, smell the fresh air and see the beautiful flowers and know that someone far great than us, is in charge of the path before us.
Marianne, sounds like someone that fits me. It would make you feel like you could be in her place and be part of the story. It sounds like my type of book and I'm anxious to read it.

I know it's too late for the drawing on the 2nd - Happy 4th by the way. I would love to be entered for Surrender the Heart though.
ReplyDeleteAs usual your writing draws the readers into the story as I'm sure the book will too. Although many characters have imperfections of some sort they are often something within the person's control to work at changing but Marianne's average looks don't fall into that category. Despite this I know that is how God created her and if she places her life under His leadership He can turn her "straw" into beautiful and priceless "gold". I can't wait to see how "He gives her the desires of her heart when she trusts Him with her dreams" (paraphrase from Psalm 37:3-4 [see also verses 5&6])
